A Great Example of Mentoring In June 1970, I was an SP4. I had been doing EOD in Vietnam for less than 100 days when I was confronted with my first 500-pound bomb to defuse. First Cav was setting up a fire support base they were calling FSB Camelot. While they were putting in M102 105 mm howitzer gun positions, they ran across dud bombs. So, SFC Fearnow and I were called in to get rid of the bombs. Two of the bombs had a red window, meaning they were armed. So, immediately we evacuated the FSB by having everybody move 300 meters away. Even if they both had shown green windows, we would treat them as armed, but when red was showing, there was no doubt. One of the bombs was only about twenty feet from a 105 mm gun position. If it went off, it would take the gun and the crew with it. It would destroy a significant part of the FSB. My mouth went dry as I took one bomb and Fearnow took the other one. He said that we’ll deal with the two bombs at the same time. This was my first big bomb to render safe. I used my bare hands to turn the fuze counterclockwise to unscrew the fuze from the bomb.  Luckily, the fuze was not on it too tight. I started turning. The threads were smooth. The fuze rotated. I could feel every rotation through my hands, through my whole body. It's like I became connected to the bomb, like we were one thing, and if it decided to detonate, we would become nothing together. Turn. Turn. Turn. As I unscrewed the fuze, I wondered what would happen if it detonated. Would I see the bomb swell and a bright flash? Would I still have consciousness without a body? The fuze came free. I stood up and looked over at Fearnow. He was grinning. "Not bad, Vining." "Yeah," I said. My voice sounded strange. "Not bad." Since my childhood, I had always wondered what it would feel like to disarm a large bomb when I saw a British bomb disposal officer do it in a movie. It was a large German bomb in a catacomb under London, England. We walked fifty meters into the jungle, placed both fuzes in a small crater, rigged them with C-4, and a priming system. The explosion was sharp and clean. Two red windows were gone. We pulled it together, no drama, no red windows. Just another piece of ordnance rendered safe. By 1600 hours, we were done. The bombs would be sling-loaded out by helicopter. I describe this incident with a lot more detail in “Blasting Through.” But for today, I wanted to use this story as an example of mentoring. At FSB Camelot, I recognized a great mentor in SFC Fearnow. He allowed me to defuse my first big bomb while he defused his bomb. We worked side by side. Close enough that he could help if I needed it, but far enough away that I had to do it myself. Mentoring doesn’t have to be complicated. It should be a natural extension of your leadership. It’s not so much about teaching or supervising. Fearnow was just there to assure me that I could do it but that if I ran into trouble, he was there. This was one of the first times I noted to myself how important mentoring is. I decided to catalog in my mind each time I saw a great example of mentoring like I had witnessed with Fearnow that day in June 1970. I figured that if I lived long enough, I would be the one on the ground with the most experience. And then I could pull out those filed away memories of good mentoring and help others practice the skill and build their confidence at the same time.

@CeceCalabrese @miles_commodore Nope furthest thing from it just grew up around all the Kennedy bs and this one never made any sense once you read all the strange events that night. Most important takeaway is a young woman lost her life and she deserves our sympathy and the truth.

Do you remember the Chappaquiddick Affair involving Senator Ted Kennedy driving a car that plunged into a pond in 1969? I feel like this story is never discussed.

So what was in that envelope at George H.W. Bush’s funeral? Hillary Clinton read it twice like she couldn’t believe it. Jeb Bush looked horrified. The Obamas. The Clintons. The Pences. The Bidens. Everyone got one. Except Donald Trump. No one ever explained it.

BUZZ’S BEDTIME STORIES: “DRUNK BILL CLINTON & GOLFER GREG” (A THREAD) 1) When I worked for President Clinton I would jog with him early in the morning. I was among a small cadre that included the doctor and the Secret Service jogging detail. I would run just behind the president as part of the Secret Service phalanx posted around him. We’d plod about three miles or so. Through many a jogging morning, the president and I became informal and comfortable with each other. These jogging sessions came to an abrupt end during the early morning of March 14, 1997. The President, senior staff, and I arrived at golfer Greg Norman’s compound at Hobe Sound, just outside of West Palm Beach, Florida, at about midnight. The President had developed a friendship with Norman and was visiting to play in a three-day charity golf tournament. Once we helicoptered in, the President dismissed the doctor and myself to our bungalow and some sleep after what had been a very long day. Clinton was ending the day with the Norman’s over a nightcap and would prepare for an early start in the golf tournament the next morning. Just after one in the morning, I was startled awake by a Secret Service agent banging on my door shouting, “Get up, get up, the president’s down!” The doctor and I looked at each other in shock, fearing the absolute worst. We jumped to our feet, and I threw on the closest clothing I could find-jogging shorts and shoes, a University of North Carolina T-shirt, and a blue blazer. We ran out into Norman’s front yard and found the president sitting on the walkway, pants leg pulled above his knee, in obvious pain. “Buzz,” he said, “I think I hurt myself.” Major Bill Lang, the White House on-duty doctor and an officer in the US Army, looked him over. “Sir,” Bill said, “you’ve torn a tendon in your knee and we need to get you to the hospital fairly quickly.” (CONTINUED)

Appeals Court just ruled that ALL construction of President Trump’s new White House ballroom can RESUME! The DC Circuit just slapped down the latest activist judge attempt to block it. This massive 90k sq ft State Ballroom (replacing the old East Wing) will finally give America a proper venue for world leaders, state dinners, and events — privately funded by patriots. Another HUGE WIN for President Trump and the American people.

Your Saturday "More You Know" moment where you can impress your neighbor Kyle as he bitches about gas prices. I bet Kyle didnt know that Americans discovered and developed the resources in the Middle East. The massive Gulf fields that dominate today? Largely unlocked by U.S. companies in the 1930s. Kyle probably doesn't know that just like we did in Venezuela, western companies brought the drilling tech and capital that launched those industries. In 1908 the first big commercial strike in Persia (Iran) at Masjed Soleyman. British-led Anglo-Persian Oil Co (later BP) sparked the race. So a tip of the hat to the Brits - back when they had grit. But the real transformation of the Arabian side? That came from Americans. 1932: Bahrain. First oil discovered on the Arab side of the Gulf — by Standard Oil of California (Socal, now Chevron). Bahrain Petroleum Co (BAPCO) strikes it at Jebel Dukhan, where Americans prove the region’s potential. 1933–1938: Saudi Arabia. King Abdulaziz grants concession to Socal. American geologists and drillers risk it all in the desert. On March 3, 1938: Dammam No. 7 gushes commercial oil. This was the birth of Saudi oil — now the world’s largest reserves. Pure American smarts and perseverance. 1938: Kuwait. Burgan field (one of the biggest ever) discovered by Kuwait Oil Co which was a 50/50 American Gulf Oil and the British. U.S. tech and expertise were key. Kyle probably doesn't know that Americans were in on the ground floor across the Peninsula. They brought the capital, engineers, rigs, and know-how when others couldn't. They built Aramco (originally California Arabian Standard Oil), pipelines, refineries. While Britain got the first strike in Iran, Americans discovered and developed the oil across Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and parts of Kuwait — the heart of Middle East energy. Oh and Libya. But that is another post. And that is your short history lesson for the day. Tell Kyle. He will be impressed.
