A 30-year-old woman has been sentenced to three years and nine months in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the death of eight-year-old Nina Napope Dumais. Ashley Rattlesnake received a reduced sentence due in part to her guilty plea and will serve her time outside Alberta. Rattlesnake was originally charged with first-degree murder, later reduced to second-degree murder, before pleading guilty to manslaughter in September 2025. The Crown sought nine years, while the defence asked for seven. The plea deal was opposed by Nina’s family and the Edmonton Police Service. The court also considered a Gladue report in sentencing. Court heard that Nina was in Rattlesnake’s care on April 22, 2023, when she suffered a fatal head injury. A medical examiner found additional older injuries and a severe untreated infection, concluding she may have survived if she had received medical attention. Instead of calling 911, Rattlesnake contacted others for help disposing of the body. Nina’s remains were later found inside a hockey bag in a truck in Maskwacis, Alberta.
