We arent. Its an emissions and resources game. Where we used to run 2-8 5k foot or less trains with 3-4 locos each, we quite frequently run 1-2 10-15k foot trains(sometimes longer) with 3-5 locos. We’ve diminished train count by more than half, improved fuel efficiency, and cut delays by diminishing traffic. Theres thousands of unused locos that are relatively maintained just hangin out in tax-friendly states. Basically we run 3x the freight on 1/3rd the locos, and use less fuel/ton than ever before to boot.

Total railway length: America 220,000 km Europe 211,000 km China 165,000 km We also have more locomotives. We use them for cargo not humans. But we use them a LOT.
