My friend, who lives and works in Britain, had made plans to come visit me in Texas. His oldest daughter was "tongue-tied" meaning her tongue had an over-short frenulum, so she couldn't move it freely. This is a quick easy fix - just snip the frenulum, and seal the wound. They made an appointment with the national health to have their daughter fixed up. The national health got everything set up, then gave them the date. It was right in the middle of their trip to America. They called back and said, "We told you these dates we're not available. Can't we do it another time." They were told, "You have to do it on that date or wait 8 months." Argh. Well they didn't want to delay their trip. But before just shrugging their shoulders and giving up my friend, who worked for a university and so had private health as well, called the private health insurance to see what they offered. They set up an appointment THE FOLLOWING WEEK, and took her in, and when she woke up from the operation, her first question was "When are they snipping my tongue?" She didn't even realize it had been done, it was so painless. He said that the private insurance was so much friendlier and easier to deal with than the national health. Did it cost more? I don't know - he got it through his work. Of course, if you're Canadian you don't have this option - private health is illegal unless you're a rich politician, who are known to go to the USA for treatment. In the early 2000s, a Canadian mother was pregnant with quadruplets. They didn't think they could take proper care of her so they flew her by light plane to Helena Montana to a hospital where she had the kids, then flew home. Canadian health paid for the whole thing. It just seems kind of sad that apparently the best way to treat the quad-mom was to fly her 500 miles to Helena, which is hardly a giant metroplex, because Canada couldn't handle it.
