Cape Town just approved 2 new data centres so big, they’d cover 14 rugby fields. And Capetonians are not happy… The data centres measure 120 000m2 of development, planned for the King Air Industria site near Cape Town International Airport. Here's what we know so far: • The Cape Town Municipal Planning Tribunal approved the land use application from King David Country Club, the landowner • The plan rezones 3 erven into one General Industry zone and removes an old limit that kept floor space under 300 000m2 • A small land swap with the City (involving a substation) is part of the deal • US company Equinix is set to build the facilities • Estimated needs: up to 174 megawatts of electricity and 4.4 billion litres of water a year for cooling The application didn't spell out exactly how much water or power the centres will use, or what their greenhouse gas emissions will look like. For a city that came within a hair of Day Zero water droughts and a country that's lived through years of blackouts/loadshedding, you can understand why citizens are concerned. Some see it as essential digital infrastructure and investment for Cape Town. Others argue that approving a project this size without answers on water and energy demand is putting the cart before the horse, especially with scarce resources already under pressure. Groups opposing the approval say the public deserves those numbers before a project like this gets the go-ahead, not after. From what I have learned, there are currently 4 large data centres proposed for Cape Town. If approved, they will consume 34% of our electricity. There is also a 400 megawatt facility planned for Durban, proposed to be the largest in SA. This will consume 25% of Durban's electricity. Many countries are declining to build data centres, with the USA lobbying against building them. Switzerland is building their alternative to big tech AI called Euria. It runs on renewable energy, and the heat that the servers generate is recycled into 6000 homes in Geneva. What do you think about the newly approved data centres for Cape Town? Three asylum seekers who raped a woman on Brighton Beach in what a judge described as an "entirely predatory, callous and contemptuous" attack have been jailed. Abdulla Ahmadi (26), from Iran, and Ibrahim Alshafe (26), from Egypt, were each sentenced to 21 years in prison, while Karin Al-Danasurt (21), from Egypt, was jailed for 18 years and 6 months after filming the rape and being convicted as a secondary party. The three men were living in a Home Office asylum hotel near Horsham at the time. Prosecutors said they were "on the lookout for women for sexual purposes" before targeting the victim, who was heavily intoxicated and incapacitated. She was taken behind a beach hut, where she was raped while Al-Danasurt recorded the attack. The victim told the court: "My skin crawls. No matter how hard I scrub it, I still feel dirty." She said she still hears the men's laughter whenever she closes her eyes and feared she was going to be killed. The court heard the men returned to their asylum hotel by bus after the attack and later held a barbecue. Each man will also serve six years on extended license after release and must serve at least two-thirds of their sentence before being eligible for parole.

Algerian National Jailed for Six Years for Choking and Sexually Assaulting Woman in Donegal Alleyway A 28-year-old factory worker from Algeria has been sentenced to six years in prison for choking and sexually assaulting a young woman in a dark alleyway after meeting her in a Letterkenny nightclub. Mohamed Hallam, who had been living in Donegal since 2023, was convicted following a trial at the Central Criminal Court in January. He was found guilty of sexual assault, assault causing harm, and non-fatal strangulation committed on October 20, 2024. Hallam had pleaded not guilty to the charges. Mr Justice David Keane described the offences as “violent predatory” acts carried out for the defendant’s own sexual gratification. The judge highlighted two main aggravating factors: the serious harm inflicted on the victim and the fact that she was highly vulnerable due to being heavily intoxicated at the time. The judge initially set headline sentences of eight years for the sexual assault and non-fatal strangulation charges, and six years for the assault causing harm. These were reduced by one year to account for mitigating factors, including Hallam’s acceptance of the jury’s verdict and his lack of previous convictions. The sentences will run concurrently and are backdated to October 24, 2024, when he was taken into custody. The final year of the sentence was suspended on conditions that he keep the peace and remain of good behaviour. In her victim impact statement, the woman, who is in her early 20s, said she had no memory of meeting Hallam in the nightclub. She recalled coming to in a cold, dark alleyway, being pinned down, forcibly kissed and touched without consent, and struggling to breathe as he choked her. She suffered extensive bruising across her body, including what may have been a bite mark on her stomach, which she found particularly distressing. After the attack, her clothes were torn and dishevelled. The woman had consumed around 10 alcoholic drinks that night and was visibly intoxicated. CCTV footage showed her staggering as Hallam led her from the nightclub into the alleyway. She later contacted a friend in distress, reporting that she had been strangled. Her friends found her hysterical shortly afterwards.DNA evidence linked Hallam to the crime: blood on his clothing matched the victim, and semen on her clothing matched his DNA. When arrested, Hallam told gardaí “she’s a liar” and otherwise made no comment in interviews. His defence counsel offered a “sincere apology” to the victim on his behalf, describing his actions as a “gross lapse of judgement” and expressing remorse. However, a Probation Service report noted that Hallam continued to maintain the sexual activity was consensual, which appeared inconsistent with his instructions to his lawyers. Justice Keane ordered two years of post-release supervision, during which Hallam must engage in psychological counselling and a sex offender treatment programme. This case underscores a troubling pattern of violent sexual assaults and predatory crimes in Ireland, where foreign nationals are disproportionately involved amid rising overall incidents. Out of eight murders of women reported in 2026 so far—already exceeding the full-year total for 2025—six (or more, depending on exact classifications of foreign-born suspects) have been linked to non-Irish nationals or foreign-born individuals. This Algerian national's six-year sentence for choking and sexually assaulting a vulnerable, intoxicated young woman in Donegal highlights the serious risks posed by some individuals entering the country, contributing to broader concerns over public safety, the strain on the justice system, and the need for stronger immigration vetting and enforcement to protect Irish communities.

Five Youths Arrested After Public Order Incident in Virginia, Co. Cavan Gardaí have arrested and detained five youths following a major public order incident in Virginia this evening. The arrests relate to an alleged assault that occurred after 7:30pm. A significant number of Gardaí responded swiftly to incidents reported at both Lough Ramor and the Main Street of the town. An elderly man was allegedly attacked by a number of individuals. Eyewitnesses reported that he was set upon by at least four people. Several males required medical attention following the incident and were conveyed to Cavan General Hospital. The condition of the man who was allegedly assaulted is not known at this time. All five individuals are being held in Garda stations in the county tonight as the investigation continues. Gardaí remain present in the town. A Garda spokesperson confirmed tonight that several persons have been conveyed to hospital. A local business owner had earlier posted in a Virginia community Facebook group describing an attack near Virginia College involving a group alleged to include African individuals. The post referenced knife involvement and an intervention by a father who was with children. These social media accounts correspond in general location and circumstances to the reported events. This remains a developing situation. Further details will be released as the Garda investigation progresses.
