The important questions that need to be answered are about institutional failure. Why did police & social workers fail to act on complaints from victims & families? Are they still in positions of authority? What measures need to be in place to prevent repetition?

#LATEST 76% OF PUBLIC BACK CALLS FOR NATIONAL INQUIRY INTO RAPE GANGS 📣 🔍 65% of @UKLabour voters at the 2024 election support one, with only 13% of adults opposing an inquiry. womenpolicycentre.com/a-new-yougov-p…

@JamieDGilmour @DaleSearle2 @UKLabour Jamie, the Jay enquiry only focused 2 weeks out of 7 years on the grooming/rape gangs. That is not enough. We need a more specific inquiry into all the Councils affected by the rape gangs.

@WPCThinkTank @UKLabour Representative democracy is the root cause because leaders and politicians and public officials are not accountable. In direct democracy, failure would not be tolerated. Do the bidding of the majority of the people - or else.

@dijennings99 @Londonlife44 @implausibleblog I think in many cases "research" has come to mean "assemble statements in support of my position" rather than "assemble relevant and reliable evidence so that I can form an opinion". As in "I did my own research".

Andy Burnham calls out Trevor Phillips on inquiries into grooming gangs "It's interesting you ask me that question because you don't know what I've already done.. There has been.. And is.. An ongoing major inquiry.. There has been a substantial report into what happened in Oldham.. As a result of that there is a major police investigation.. As result there have been multiple arrests, charges and convictions" "That obviously seems to be lost on you.. Instead of facts, people are going straight to propaganda"

@alixsharkey_ @suzanne_moore I think the strenuous objection is also a minority view. I can't personally recall an example from news coverage. Perhaps you could provide one from the last week?

@The_Inquisitor If it makes sense. Clearly, selling off commercial buildings under value and then having to rent them back for several decades at a yearly rate above the total sale price isn't good.

Fun fact - In 2001, the UK Government sold 600 of its HMRC buildings to a Bermuda corporation (Mapeley Steps Ltd) for £220M. HMRC now rents its buildings for about £269M per year. This example and many others like it should tell you that governments do not think long term, they are not strategic, they are either corrupt or incompetent and therefore are not the best place to pool our money to get important things done.

@UllaMR @polblonde @Keir_Starmer @UKLabour Can anyone explain exactly what this programme funded? From the website I think it produced resources, sponsored trips, maybe contributed some salary costs, to a small number of schools? Is it really the sine qua non of Latin teaching in the state sector?

My view of Labour turning this country into a cultural desert: 'solitudinem faciunt, pacem appellant'. It's from Tacitus @Keir_Starmer @UKLabour One of those authors you don't want kids to study.

@W_Poulos @SchoolsWeek Why Latin, though? Why not Mandarin or Welsh? Because it can be used to exclude people from the circles of power. We won't fix the system by pandering to it.

@SchoolsWeek Well, if you want to make Latin seem MORE elitist, this is the exact way to do it. Make it available only to those who can afford it.

My wife asked me why we have a word in the English language for the process of throwing somebody through a window?🤷‍♂️ And at what point did we feel that we needed a word for it? 🤷‍♂️ 🇺🇦🇬🇧

@DavidVidecette @mrmarkdolan I just read text closely. It used to be wise before politicians normalised lying. I've not read the Labour manifesto so can't comment, beyond saying that "indirectly" seems key and asking what tax doesn't indirectly tax working people?

@JamieDGilmour @mrmarkdolan Oh, okay… I suppose you’re of the view Labour were clear in their manifesto about ‘no tax rises for working people’, whilst at the same time planning to raise employers NIC, which indirectly does tax ‘working people’?

@DavidVidecette @mrmarkdolan To me it says they aren't considering it. They say they have red lines, but they don't say this is a red line, just that it's not something in the preparatory work. I might say the same about buying a Tesla. It's not unambiguous.
