A 28-year-old Venezuelan man who was deported from the U.S. and detained in El Salvador’s notorious CECOT prison last year, told @camiloreports he contemplated suicide during what he described as “total hell.” Now back in Venezuela, Neiyerver Adrián Leon Rengel has become the first known former CECOT detainee to sue the U.S. government, filing a federal lawsuit seeking at least $1.3 million in damages. He says he was falsely labeled a gang member and deported to a third country despite having no deportation order. In a statement to CBS News, DHS maintained that Leon Rengel is a member of the Tren de Aragua gang, but the agency declined to share evidence to support its claim, saying doing so would “undermine” national security.
