In ancient Rome, the plebeians—the working class, including merchants, farmers, and artisans—had no voice in government. Major decisions were made exclusively by the patricians, the elite, and when injustice became unbearable, the plebeians didn’t protest with speeches or riots—they simply left. This form of protest, known as the *secessio plebis* (from the Latin *secedo*, “I withdraw”), involved abandoning the city en masse. They packed supplies, closed shops and workshops, and marched beyond the city walls, leaving Rome eerily empty. Without the plebeians, the city ground to a halt. Markets closed, food production ceased, and there were no hands to farm the land or defend the city. The patricians quickly realized a fundamental truth: without the people, there was no power. The effects of the first secession were immediate. Debts were forgiven, and for the first time, the plebeians were granted genuine political influence with the creation of the office of the Tribune of the Plebs. These tribunes, elected by the plebeians, enjoyed immunity and had the authority to veto unjust decisions by other officials, acting as protectors of the people against abuses of power. The office endured throughout the Republic and even into the Empire, symbolizing popular resistance and representation. Only briefly interrupted during the decemvirate in the 5th century B.C.—a failed experiment in which ten magistrates held absolute power—the tribunate was quickly restored, reaffirming the plebeians’ right to be heard. Even in Rome, the powerful learned that ignoring the people could empty the streets and paralyze the city. #archaeohistories

Health financing is not a cost—it’s an investment. Every $1 invested generates up to $10 in returns, yet millions in Africa still face poverty due to weak health systems. Tomorrow at the @_AfricanUnion Summit (#AUSummit), leaders will discuss ways to boost domestic health financing and align investments with Africa’s priorities. Here’s why it matters ⤵️ #AfricaCDC #AfricaHealthFinancing

The persecution of Grace Mulei for demanding accountability from the Government is anathema to our constitution and rule of law. Her arrest is not only substantively flawed, but was done in a manner inconsistent with the inherent dignity of every person, especially vulnerable members of society. The alleged offence of causing a public disturbance is only punishable by a fine or imprisonment for 6 months. Article 49(2) of the Constitution prohibits persons arrested on such claims from being remanded in custody. The actions of the @NPSOfficial_KE and @DCI_Kenya against Grace Mulei offend the constitution, law, and the Police's own standing orders. The @LawSocietyofKe will provide legal support to secure the release of Grace.
