as with a lot of Elon companies it goes like “TESLA WILL NEVER SELF DRIVE WITHOUT LIDAR” “Ah well, nevertheless, SPACEX WILL NEVER REUSE BOOSTERS!” “Ah well, nevertheless, STARLINK WILL NEVER SCALE!” “Ah well, nevertheless…” I have a feeling that most experts are retarded
Chris Combs (iterative design enjoyer)@DrChrisCombs

I've been saying this for a long time (even though you didn't want to hear it) But now the chorus of experts (and even Elon!) is growing louder with the admission that we are hitting the limit of what you can accomplish with 50-year-old tile technology -You can redefine "rapid reuse" and build so many starships that you are fine with a one-month turnaround -You can increase your safety margin to the point where you don't care if tiles fail (at the cost of payload) -Maybe you get lucky with a new tile chemistry that is more robust (they are trying) but the same thing that makes the tiles work (lightweight and low conductivity) is why they are so brittle As the article notes, this hasn't been a basic research priority for 30 years. And we're in a cycle where basic research funding is shrinking. 30 years ago we didn't need better tiles, so we didn't invest. This is what happens when you only put money into the problems of today. Perhaps SpaceX gets bailed out with a material science hail mary and we speed-run 25 years of basic research into a novel solution in the next few years. Probably not though. It's gonna take a bunch of basic science and some really novel approaches to solve this problem.

they attack him *because* he’s one of the best, most thoughtful moderate folks in the ai policy space. pour encourager les autres. through molotovs or sham trials, pause ai is a terrorist movement.
CuddlySalmon@nptacek

this if they actually took the time to understand seb's positions on AI risk they'd understand he is one of the best folks to have in his current role and that they are ultimately doing damage to their own cause by calling for his ouster

@GreenTextRepost “Unload” means move the pin, there’s nothing to unload, you already have to move the pin to where you want it no matter what the guy does

Seb’s post is vibe engineering in the sense that he is using the meme as a signifier for the vibe of feeling oppressed by regulations. None of this is meant to be taken literally and to do so signals either a poor understanding of the online landscape (unskillful) or a knee-jerk emotional reaction (even worse). Like I don’t agree with him on an ideological level but the optics here are abysmal dogshit for AI safety
Holly ⏸️ Elmore@ilex_ulmus

I am reporting this to the FBI. It is a threat of violence against the government, the PauseAI movement and my organization @pauseaius. @GoogleDeepMind, @sebkrier should be fired. This is completely unacceptable.

@alonechan_2 The cutting edge work i'm hoping i can find ways to participate in, is where humanoid robots take on the work of things like the shoemaking and clothing industry (where you need hand stiching), and eventually as complex as tactile feedback while teaching martial technique.

@alonechan_2 Most of the humanoid robotics will be edge-cases of Comparative Advantage. Specialized machines could do a one-time assembly. But it's more valuable for the specialized machine to mass produce while the humanoid robot builds a single unit.
