I wish cruelty, violence & xenophobia weren't American, but our history says otherwise. But our history is also kindness, welcome, care for others, and speaking and acting against injustice. May we rise up to protect innocents from unjust suffering. May we beat this evil back.

A young man from our community group showed up randomly for dinner last night. He came in, claimed a hug, asked to be fed & helped himself to a glass of milk from the fridge. Basically, he acted like I was his mum & my kids were his siblings. Why? Because church is family.

The problem here isn’t a lack of category distinctions but a failure to let Scripture define its own categories. The warning texts in Hebrews aren’t aimed at true believers but at those who are outside the faith, those who might profess Christ but do not truly believe. Faith perseveres, full stop, because God preserves His people (John 10:28-29; Philippians 1:6; Romans 8:30). The warning passages serve to expose those who are near to the covenant community yet remain in unbelief, much like Israel in the wilderness (Hebrews 3:16-19). True believers heed these warnings and persevere, not because they maintain their own faithfulness, but because God ensures it (Hebrews 10:39). The examination called for in 2 Corinthians 13:5 is not a perpetual introspection that undermines assurance, but a call to see if one is truly in the faith, which according to Protestant confessions is resting in Christ alone. The real danger isn’t in calling people to self-examination; it’s in failing to make clear that those who are in Christ will never be lost.
