OPPENHEIMER UPDATE: VPD & rangers aggressively drag an Indigenous man away from his belongings and proceed to tear down his tent. He is never even given the chance to retrieve essential belongings. A supporter is then arrested for peacefully observing.

Universal heath care or not, cannabis is taxed disproportionately to is cost to society. Def not an evidence based reg

@chugglesworth @Andreadobbs2 @JeremyPJacob It's important to not lose sight of why and how they were to able to justify these taxation rates. The industry over-sold the taxation bit when pushing for legalization, and the feds legalized under the guise of protecting public safety/health, as we have socialized healthcare.

Bizarre stat @JeremyPJacob shared with me. A single tobacco cigarette contains approximately 1g of plant matter. The excise tax on that is about 14 cents. A single gram of cannabis carries a $1 tax. How does this make sense?

@KirkTousaw I’m thinking that by extension and for fairness (though it seems fairness doesn’t exist in these sectors) you would need to give cannabis shops the right to sell liquor products. This would be a bigger lift for cannabis shops and a bigger draw on liquor shops

@JeremyPJacob I’m not suggesting exclusive sales in liquor stores. Cannabis stores too. Bars and stadiums and restaurants too. Might create some very small downward pressure but the gains in liquor harm reduction, consumer choice and increased overall sales for that segment offsets it IMO.

When will provinces here in Canada allow this? It’s an absolute no brainer IMO. Give people a safer choice right there at the store.

@KirkTousaw In that case the cannabis retailers would get a lift but the liquor retailers would be pissed. Who has a stronger industry/lobbying group?

I understand the perspective, and it hinges on the specific wording of the question. If we're speaking purely about the money, then the logic is as follows: 1. The man steals $100 from the register. The store is -$100. 2. The man returns the $100 when buying the goods, bringing the store's balance back to even ($0 net loss from the initial theft). 3. The store then gives the man $30 in change. This brings the store's net money loss to -$30. So, strictly in terms of cash, the store is out $30. However, when the value of the goods is factored in, then the store's total loss is $170. But, if the question is strictly asking about money, then the answer would be $30.
