I want to give a big shoutout to the incredible @RayDorseyNeuro ! Not only is he a passionate clinician and researcher, but very supportive of young (and not so young 😉) scientists. If you haven’t read this book, you should! endingpd.org

Rising Star Challenge for the @DBSThinkTank winners announced live TODAY from a highly competitive field. These projects were 'off the charts' for novelty and creativity and all were brilliant. From BGOOSE to Connectomics to predicting OCD outcomes the future is bright. These three stars have won the golden ticket to attend the 2025 Think Tank and top 2 cash awards too. BRAVO.

When they go low (beta) we go high (gamma) for adaptive DBS for Parkinson's. @littleneuro showing this new @NatureMedicine paper w/ three woman first authors which he is very proud of as three rising stars in the field. @DBSThinkTank first speaker today showing a paper literally just published!

The most creative, intense, and rewarding project I’ve ever worked on! Now out @NatureMedicine. Real-world blinded adaptive DBS halves time with motor symptoms and improves quality of life in Parkinson’s disease. With the amazing @scernera1 @LaurenHHammer @littleneuro Philip Starr
UCSF Neurosurgery@NeurosurgUCSF

Out today in @NatureMedicine, groundbreaking work by Philip Starr MD, PhD, Simon Little MD, PhD (@littleneuro) and colleagues shows that adaptive DBS provides better symptom control than standard DBS in a real-world setting: nature.com/articles/s4159…

Can you name primary, secondary and tertiatry prevention strategies for Parkinson's disease? Caitlin Agarwal in @NEJM was the artist for this supplementary figure which is a gem and you should not miss reading and digesting it, as it is hidden in the supplementary information. Key Points: - Prevention includes 3 goals – 'primary prevention identifies and removes causes so disease does not develop, secondary prevention identifies the disease processes and intervenes to prevent symptom onset, and tertiary prevention reduces the burden and slows progression in manifest disease.' - The figure addresses both 'a population perspective and individual perspective.' - 'Primary prevention involves identifying and removing toxicant chemicals. Education regarding healthy lifestyle, including exercise, diet and sleep applies both to populations and to individuals.' - 'Screening genetic risks even in the absence of disease-associated change.' - An opportunity for 'gene-specific interventions.' - Secondary prevention prevents 'development of manifest disease.' Biomarkers become key. - Tertiary prevention 'aims to reduce the symptom burden of manifest disease and slow or stop progression.' My take: We need to shift left from tertiary prevention to secondary and to primary prevention. This should be done concurrently as time is ticking for persons with disease and for persons who will get the disease. nejm.org/doi/abs/10.105… #Parkinsons @ParkinsonDotOrg @endingpdbook @FixelInstitute

Video-based machine learning can help clinicians predict motor impairment severity for patients w/ #ParkinsonsDisease, a study finds. The system "could support faster & better diagnostics & treatment in the future.” UCSF’s Dr. Simon Little says. ucsfh.org/45ZEoKO

Taylor Swift made her debut at her first national neurosurgery meeting in Nashville TN today. Well, these guys wrote this song with her when she was 14.
