@suchnerve @CrazyWeeMonkey They have to do DC-DC conversion. The “direct” part just means they aren’t converting to AC first. But they’re also not just plugging solar panels straight into a battery. To do this at your home, your existing solar inverter won’t work. You’d need another power converter box.

EVs not supporting DC slow charging seems illogical in the context of so many people now having solar panel + home battery setups, which currently must invert their DC into AC only for an EV’s onboard power supply to turn it right back into DC - about 10 to 20% total power loss.

It’s also good for just answering questions while filling in the software. “What does this question mean?” Or “how should I fill this in?” I had a lot more confidence doing mine this year. I didn’t put the whole pdf into grok, but just some summary tables. But grok did calculate the same refund as the software. It still didn’t seem right. I used new software this year and my refund was higher than before. I thought I did something wrong. But grok explained the higher SALT cap thing and exactly how much that affected my refund.

.@grok just saved my sister $1,441 on her taxes. I had it check the turbotax output and it found a mistake. Seriously - 4.20 is very good with taxes.

@eevblog @rationalaussie Was going to say the same thing. As an electrical engineer, with experience in power systems, cabling design and test, standards compliance etc, I should be able to take a 4 week crash course to become an electrician. But nope, I’d have to start from scratch.

It's a protected gate kept industry in Australia Even qualified electrical engineers like myself can't get an electrical license (even a restricted one) without starting from scratch, going through the entire apprentice system. Insane. It didn't used to be like this, you could just sit the exam & get your license

The bigger question here - and the real problem - is why does it take 5 years to become an electrician? You're seriously gonna tell me the smartest white collar workers (soon to be unemployed) are effectively prohibited from getting employed as a lucrative tradesperson during the final period where human employment even matters, because of regulations? It's insane. A smart person could turbo charge this in 6 months. The West needs fast-track trades programs.
Jason Shuman@JasonrShuman

The US needs 500,000 new electricians this decade. Apprenticeships take 5 years. Microsoft’s Brad Smith says it’s the #1 thing slowing data center expansion. The AI bottleneck isn’t chips. It’s the trades.

@jlwgreg @MeganNyvold I had a tax refund check lost in the mail last year. It wasn’t that hard to get a new one, but it did delay it by a couple months. More annoying than anything.

@dosedpro @bluewmist Pretty much same. Go to gym after work, change clothes. Tell myself I can just do stretches and leave if I want. But since I’m already there I end up doing something. And even if it is a light day, better than nothing. Habit of going no matter what is best plan.

We've reached the part of the timeline where a head of state has to film proof-of-life videos because Grok said he's a deepfake. In 2003 Saddam Hussein used body doubles and everyone debated which one was real. In 2026 you just need an AI chatbot to say "100% fake" and the conspiracy writes itself. The Turing test wasn't supposed to be applied to actual humans.

What the hell kind of shoes is a 28 year old man supposed to wear. Sneakers/skate shoes feel like that "fellow kids" meme. I'm not wearing boots every day, I'm not a construction worker or a folk singer. Don't get me started on dress shoes. Might as well just buy my funeral tux

If you use a personal phone/laptop for your work, pay very close attention to this little detail. Iran attackers wipe 200k devices at a company called Stryker. Within those devices appears to be employees PERSONAL devices. The attackers used the company’s MDM software, which is basically IT management software running on everything. It’s an incredibly attractive backdoor to an attacker. I successfully targeted MDM software for several Red Team engagements. It’s… lots of fun :) Anyway, a lot of companies require you to install their MDM software on your personal devices before you can access resources like Corp email. It’s used to keep devices updated, lock things down if they get stolen, etc. The company often promises that they won’t access personal data, erase any personal data, etc. But this is often ONLY POLICY. If a bad actor gains access to the MDM tool, as was the case here, then anything can happen. People should be aware of these risks. I refused to run MDM software on any of my personal devices. The company needs to provide me with hardware if they want that. I personally isolate all corp devices to their own network too. If an adversary can get into the corp laptop, then can then get inside my network… there have been cases of it happening in the past.

@dennismhogan I wear my father's Florsheim's that he bought from a friend in the 90s. They *STILL* look amazing and the sticker prices back then was $250 (it's on the box). That's well over $500 today.
