There’s a particular story captured in three of the four Gospels (namely Matthew, Mark and Luke) which I found both disturbing and intriguing. The wording from each Gospel differs, but the gist is very much the same throughout. For simplicity I’ll reference the passage in Matthew (chapter 8, verses 28 to 34). In short, sometime during the earlier portion of Jesus’s ministry (roughly 30 AD), He came across two men who were possessed by demonic spirits. Upon approaching them, the demons recognized Jesus immediately and began to plead with Jesus not to “torment them before the time.” Knowing that Jesus was going to command them to leave these two men, the demons essentially asked permission from Jesus to instead inhabit a herd of pigs on a nearby farm. Jesus obliged, and then ordered them into the pigs. After the demons “transferred” (not sure what verb to use here) from the men to the pigs, the pigs went “hog-wild” (pun intended) and violently rushed out to a nearby lake and drowned. While there are plenty of takeaways from this story, here are a few which stood out to me. 1) The demons recognized Jesus immediately. This is interesting, as at this particular time most of the apostles weren’t even sure who He was. His identity was still unfolding. 2) They were afraid of Jesus, and with good reason. While most of us think as Jesus as being gentle, tender, loving and caring (and He is all of those things), we tend to forget that He’s also the ultimate bad-ass. When He returns His image will be in stark contrast to how we typically envision Him (where He’s emaciated, beaten-down and hanging from a cross). I definitely don’t envy anyone on His wrong side. 3) They had to ask permission from Jesus to inhabit the pigs, as opposed to being sent back down into Hell. 4) The demons are fully aware of their ultimate fate, as evidenced by their concern of being “tormented before the time.” They realize they’ll eventually be cast into the Lake of Fire for all of eternity, as foretold in the Book of Revelation (which had yet to be written). The thought of being consumed by demonic entities is beyond troubling, but perhaps even more so is its sheer pervasiveness. Although most people nowadays rarely give much thought to demonic possession, it’s surprisingly more common than most people realize. For instance, megastar Jay-Z has openly admitted to channeling spirits for assistance with writing lyrics and performing. Not to be outdone, his wife Beyonce also channels a demon whom she affectionally refers to as “Sasha Fierce.” Supposedly Sasha inhabits Beyonce prior to a performance while slipping into her stilettos. Unfortunately these aren’t isolated cases. To name just a few, musical sensations such as Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Carlos Santana, Jimmy Page and even Madonna have solicited the help of these evil spirits to assist with performances and/or songwriting. That I’ve come across, the most blatantly obvious example of demonic possession is Nicki Minaj’s 2012 Grammy performance of “Roman Holiday.” This was a Satanic ritual played out in front of hundreds of millions of people. Demonic possession also inspired smash hits such as Rihanna’s “Disturbia,” Eminem’s “Monster”(which also featured Rihanna) and the Moody Blues’ “The Voice.” Entertainers outside of the music industry have also been known to tap these dark spirits for performance assistance; including - but not limited to - Denzel Washington, Jack Nicholson, Oprah, Shirley McClain, Johnny Depp, Robin Williams, Jim Carrey and Jared Leto. Heath Ledger also summoned demons for his role as the Joker in the Dark Night. Sadly, they proved to be too much for him, and his life was cut tragically short as a consequence. Hollywood refers to such actors as “method actors.” This seemingly innocuous reference underscores my belief that these celebrities are utterly clueless as to the level of danger they’re facing. We are a “transracial adoptive” family…. Aka we are white and our youngest isn’t. When he was little, and we lived in Hawaii, we visited a resort. We ran into another TRA family, except this family had 2 moms. Their son, noticed me and my son immediately.
