Emma Webber: “Do not tell me it was for investigative purposes that you [Nottinghamshire Police] were holding closed media briefings and that you were neglecting to tell families key information. It’s rot. You know it. I know it. And I believe the public know it too. Don’t take us for fools.” Every word rings true and resonates. In my experience, non-reportable media briefings are an attempt, often desperate, to control the narrative. As a journalist, I've been invited to off the record, non-attributable, briefings by key figures in major events. I have always refused them. When I was investigating the origin of Covid for Channel 4, a major insider scientist refused repeated interview requests and ultimately offered a "background, non-reportable conversation". We refused the offer. On camera, on the record, or no deal. Ludicrously, in Nottinghamshire Police's complaint to the media regulator against the Nottingham Post , they argued they couldn't put some information into the public domain because it might prejudice an investigation by the watchdog and a review by the College of Policing. Like Judges, I doubt those organisations can be prejudiced by learning of hard factual evidence. -------------------------- “The reason we can’t talk about some of the information in the public domain is because it could prejudice the independent investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) and the review being conducted by the College of Policing”. ipso.co.uk/rulings/01572-…
