💬 Viewpoint: Mass abstract submissions in #MedEd have led to inflated metrics, less meaningful research, and misaligned incentives for trainees and institutions. ja.ma/4qlJES1

Do all dietary emulsifiers have the same impact on the gut❓ @JudithWellens, @vds_julie1, @JoaoPGSabino & colleagues' new findings in healthy people: ✅ An emulsifier-free diet may ⬇ cholesterol levels ✅ Following an emulsifier-free diet + 5 different dietary emulsifiers (one each time): 🔸No changes in gut microbiota diversity 🔸⬇ Short-chain fatty acids, especially in people who consume the food additive carboxymethyl cellulose 🔸No differences in: 👉 Intestinal inflammation (faecal calprotectin, C-reactive protein) 👉 Cholesterol levels 🔸Carragenan ⬆ permeability 💡 The impact of dietary emulsifiers on gut microbiota, intestinal inflammation, and permeability seems to be dependent on the emulsifier As one food contains more than one emulsifier, it seems prudent to decrease the consumption of foods rich in emulsifiers for better gut health @AGA_CGH

Yes, diet matters for preventing #IBD@JeanFredericCo1, @GimdGold, @NarulaNeeraj & colleagues have summarized what all reliable studies say: 👉 A ⬆ risk of CD was linked to: 🔴 Inflammatory diet 🔴 Ultra-processed foods 👉 A ⬇ risk of CD was linked to: 🟢 High fiber intake 🟢 Mediterranean diet 🟢 Healthy diet 🟢 Unprocessed or minimally processed foods ❓ Unknowns: No link between individual foods or food patterns and the risk of #ulcerative colitis 👇👇👇

➡️ Acute pancreatitis-related mortality among US adults has shown an overall decline since 1999. A notable increase in 2020 was likely linked to the COVID-19 pandemic. Significant disparities persist across demographic groups. 👨‍⚕️ @JonathanCLoMD 🔗 ow.ly/ivy550W9Onr
