The “coming together” here is a living arrangement. They didn’t yet live together. It doesn’t mean carnal union. But I’ll give you a counterargument along the lines of yours: why does St. Gabriel announce to Mary that she *will conceive* (future tense) and she, a betrothed woman, answers that she *does not know* (present tense reflecting an ongoing state) man? Why isn’t she expecting to conceive in the future? Why does she indicate an ongoing state of not having carnal knowledge?

Mt 1:18 How could she be found with the child of the Holy Spirit BEFORE she and Joseph came together if she and Joseph never came together?

First, stop using NIV. Once you start doing a side by side Bible you'll see where there is crucial words and full scripture verses gone completely and many word choices that change the intent into a skewed modern take. There may be some NIV better than others. But they never tell you which your studying from. the NIV OG or some newer updated version. But ultimately, the whole NIV came out of the pride of the 1970s and in no way improves on previous versions. Yet somehow has gotten a strong foothold in our culture.

While Luther did initially hold with many Marian dogmas, he slowly rejected more and more, as he found they lacked scriptural basis. In so doing, he struck at something core to Roman idolatry: That Mary had been turned into a sinless figure of forgiveness because Rome had turned Jesus into a tyrant.

Apostles (bishops) appointed presbyters (priests). Acts 14:23 & Titus 1:5. Same role, same authority in the Church. Unbroken line of succession.
