He’s confused about the nature of the new, hyper-charged anti-Israel sentiment on the left. It has nothing to do with policy or the Middle East or rebuilding Gaza or the Iran war. It is fueled by a worldview that is fundamentally antisemitic, and there is no making common cause with that. This is not a matter of negotiation or finesse. It’s about guardrails.

@romanhelmetguy This is the classic pro-war argument that was made throughout Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan. America is always on the cusp of war, they always need just a few more months. If the Iran War ends tomorrow or 20 years from now, the argument will be exactly the same.

The reason the Iranian govt is releasing propaganda videos (in English) is because they know the only way they can possibly survive this war is by convincing the American public to apply enough pressure on Trump that he stops it. This should be obvious, but people are dumb.

@ethanmwolf Nearly all the attacks on Hasan are from Democrats who want the Democratic Party to punch left and run to the right at all times. It really has nothing to do with Hasan, if he didn’t exist, they’d just find some other progressive to rage at.

What's crazy is the effort to paint Democrats who oppose Hasan Piker as right-wing... No, it's just common sense. Piker didn't even campaign for Kamala. He's not a Democrat!

I cannot get over the absolute obscenity of this tweet: a non-Jew passing judgment on how Jews define their relationship to the state of Israel and Zionism. Hasan is so poorly versed on Jewish identity that he refers below to "Judaism" rather than the Jewish people -- as he appears ignorant of the fact that Jews are a people and a nation, and that is how we largely define ourselves. But putting that aside, the suggestion that there is a "false conflation" between Israel and Jewish religion or tradition is so incredibly offensive and ill-informed. Here's a recommendation for Hasan: go to a Passover Seder next week and pay attention to what Jews say at the end: "l'shana haba'ah b'yerushalayim" ... "Next Year in Jerusalem," a nearly 2000-year-old yearning for a return to Eretz Yisrael. Finally, the notion that one can fight against antisemitism AND Zionism is impossible. To attack the latter means engaging in the former. Zionism at its core is about self-determination for the Jewish people (an idea that is enshrined in international human rights law), and to reject that idea is to reject Jewish nationhood. It is fundamentally anti-Semitic. Look, people want to criticize Israel's policies, go right ahead. It's more than fair game, particularly with the country's current vile political leadership. But don't you dare try to tell us how we should define ourselves as Jews and our relationship to Israel.

Israel is our ally. They always have been. I believe Israel is our closest ally on the planet. Here’s the thing: You can & should always criticize an ally when deserved. And criticizing Israel is not antisemitism. But my new political party is moving beyond simple criticism. Too many Democrats are openly hostile to Israel, too many are questioning Israel’s very existence, too many view Israel - and not the Islamists - as the bad guy in the region. Too many Dems no longer view Israel as our ally. And way too many on the left are now openly antisemitic. If my new political party continues down this road it would be a horrible thing for peace in this world, and politically, it would rightly destroy the Democratic Party.

@_rotimia The issue is that establishment Dems are lazy and addicted to the path of least resistance at their core. They could’ve offered a real challenge to Platner but they went with 80-year-old Janet Mills because backing her required the least amount of effort on their part.

I haven’t seen a polling gap this wide between base voters and the establishment pick since Trump vs. the Bush-era GOP. It really feels like DC strategists are missing what’s happening here.

This is the fundamental point that the aNtI-ZiONism is not AnTI-sEmITiSM crowd doesn't understand. Zionism is an essential element of modern Jewish identity (not for all Jews, but most). You can't separate anti-Zionism from anti-Semitism.

No, because you're denying that Jews have a right to self-determination and nationhood. You're trying to square the circle by saying Israel should continue to exist, albeit "unjustly," but if you don't understand how saying Jews shouldn't enjoy the same right to nationhood as any other group, including Palestinians, I'm not sure what to tell you. Perhaps you should talk to more Jews and Israelis.

@treeaston Swing voters don’t know who Hasan is and “look what he said about Israelis!” is not moving the needle. If it gets even a few Hasan fans to vote for him, it’ll already be a net positive in terms of votes.

No candidate who is serious about winning a general election in a swing state would be associating this closely with this dude.

@JonahPlatt You can’t, not just accuse all critics of Israel of being antisemities, but demand they be fired, and then fall back on this “lived truth” therapy speak. If you want to use your “lived truth” to punish other people then other people have every right to question/reject it.

The comments on this post tell you everything you need to know about the “progressive” movement. Jewish voices are talked over, Jewish trauma is invalidated, Jewish experience is not believed. Non-Jewish perception is right, Jewish truth about their own lives is wrong.

This is an interesting exchange, because alienation from the left by toxic extremists on that side is probably the primary reason for the rise of MAGA. Drew isn’t unique. He’s a uniquely charming and funny expression of a very common experience.
