This morning, as part of the #Kwibuka32 commemoration, World Vision Rwanda (@WVRwanda) is visiting the Nyanza Genocide Memorial in @KicukiroDistr to honor the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and reaffirm its commitment to promoting peace and unity. #Kwibuka32

World Vision Rwanda Staff Learned the History of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi at the Nyanza Genocide Memorial The Nyanza Genocide Memorial stands as a powerful reminder of the tragic events of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. It commemorates the victims who were killed after the withdrawal of UN peacekeepers from ETO Kicukiro on April 11, 1994. Following their departure, thousands of Tutsi who had sought protection were abandoned and left vulnerable to attacks. Many fled to Nyanza Hill, where they were brutally massacred. Today, the memorial serves as the final resting place for approximately 105,000 victims, including more than 3,000 who were killed at this very site. It also holds the remains of victims brought from other parts of Kicukiro District. The memorial includes mass graves, monuments inscribed with the names of victims, and a Garden of Memory, all dedicated to honoring those who lost their lives. Beyond remembrance, the memorial plays a vital role in education and commemoration. It is an important site during Kwibuka and is used by schools, community groups, and organizations to learn about the genocide, hear survivor testimonies, and reflect on the importance of unity and peace. The memorial and its Garden of Memory are part of post-1994 efforts to preserve history and ensure that the memory of the victims continues to live on. Through this visit, staff from @WVRwanda learned the importance of remembering the past, promoting peace, and working together to prevent such atrocities from ever happening again. #Kwibuka32
