Last year, $9B of the $35B that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) granted for research was used for administrative overhead, what is known as “indirect costs.” Today, NIH lowered the maximum indirect cost rate research institutions can charge the government to 15%, above what many major foundations allow and much lower than the 60%+ that some institutions charge the government today. This change will save more than $4B a year effective immediately.

USCIS just denied my US green card application. claiming my work lacks impact "beyond that of Apple, Inc." -- even though they acknowledge that I am the Apple CTO. WTF? I have NEVER worked at Apple! I got my cs PhD, cofounded an AI startup, and raised $20M. Yet, after waiting an entire year, I'm rejected with this absurd reasoning. I really hope DOGE, with @elonmusk, @sriramk, and @DavidSacks, can fix the system and accelerate high-skilled immigration. High-skilled immigrants are America's secret weapon. It should be merit-based -- not left to some USCIS officer carelessly reviewing documents and copy-pasting rejection reasons!

Despite this, comments like these suggest a perception that individuals from our community are polite, hardworking, and, most disturbingly, easy to bully. It is time to unequivocally condemn such behaviors, not sugarcoat them.

The contributions of Chinese scholars and scholars of Chinese descent to the field of AI are undeniable. Figures like Fei-Fei Li, Andrew Ng, and countless others have shaped the very foundation of this discipline. 8)

When the keynote focused on the misuse of generative AI, it is ironic and troubling that this behavior contributed to misinformation and bias. Was this specific example verified, or was it a fabricated anecdote to make a point? 7)

It raises an uncomfortable question—was this comment truly a careless mistake, or does it reflect a deeper prejudice? Such statements not only hurt individuals but also undermine the integrity of academic discourse. 6)

This response falls short. It lacks the courage to acknowledge the underlying issue: racial profiling and implicit bias against Chinese scholars and scholars of Chinese descent. 5)

A week has passed since the remarks made by Professor Picard during the NeurIPS 2024 keynote presentation. Her decision to highlight an “example” of unethical academic behavior by a Chinese student was both unnecessary and deeply troubling. 1)

To single out and generalize a group of people under such circumstances is not only tone-deaf but also deeply disrespectful. While both NeurIPS and Professor Picard have issued apologies, they framed this incident as an "innocent insensitivity" or "cultural generalization". 4)

What makes this even more hurtful is that these remarks were made in a room filled with Chinese scholars and scholars of Chinese descent—brilliant minds who have contributed immensely to the field of AI and beyond. 3)

The subsequent addition of a disclaimer stating that “most Chinese students are not like this” only exacerbated the issue, and it is such a bad attempting to excuse the statement. 2)
