I keep thinking about all the outrage over the SAVE Act. And how some women are saying it’s unfair, that it somehow takes away our right to vote. That’s absurd.
I think about what President John F. Kennedy said in his 1961 inaugural address: “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” One of the most powerful political statements ever.
As a woman and as an American, if I’m asked to provide a birth certificate or a marriage certificate to verify my citizenship, that feels like the bare minimum. If that’s what it takes to ensure that only legal citizens are voting in my country, then I’m willing to do it. Safeguarding elections isn’t oppression,it’s responsibility.
Voting is a right, yes, but protecting the integrity of that right is a DUTY.
