My despair and hopelessness is now manifesting as extreme rage. Anyone else following this trajectory?

@mrfitzhist I wish there were more of these! Also, many people like to learn about what it was like to live as an ordinary person in the past. These are so helpful for that.

I bang this drum a lot, but History lends itself to beautiful illustrations which bring content to life. This term, I’ve utilised them as much as possible in KS3/4 and they’re underrated. They enhance narratives, are an instant recall/discussion format and source. #historyteacher

@tlecaque Completely agree AND feel like it is important for her, as a woman, to shut down hecklers on any and every topic. I agree she needs to address it, just not there.

@MarcusLuther6 I also think it would be great to get help in a class from other students. Wonderful to model the life long learning process.

@jgoldfine @MarcusLuther6 Yes! I did this as a student teacher for two weeks. It was invaluable. I saw that there are so many ways to be a good teacher, and that the schedule of a student has WAY too much time spent seated in a day.

@MarcusLuther6 Best PD I’ve ever done is to be a student for a day and travel from class to class, following the student’s schedule.

At this point, the only thing that can save Biden's candidacy is a two-hour sit-down interview with The Times, followed by his own Wordle puzzle, a column in The Athletic, a gadget review in Wirecutter, and a family sheet-pan recipe.

At this time of year, many parents contact me to tell me they agree with Naomi Fisher. Teachers need to take their most dysregulated kids on excursions where these kids can swear at members of the public and run in front of traffic. It’s only fair, you heartless oppressors! See you in the coroners court.
Naomi Fisher@naomicfisher

At this time of year I hear about a lot of children excluded from trips and events because of their attendance and behaviour over the year. It’s part of a worrying trend which an number of parents and young people tell me about, where anything enjoyable in some school is turned into a reward which has to be earned by good behaviour. This starts with playtime, where primary school parents tell me that children are being made to sit in silence instead of going out if they haven’t been focused enough on their work. It can include things like movement breaks and sensory circuits, set up as adjustments to help children stay in school, but then turned into something which have to be earned. Both of these are counter-productive, because children need opportunities to move their bodies and let off steam in order to regulate their own behaviour. Playtime isn’t a reward for work, it’s a necessary part of the rhythm of the day. Just like adults, children need to get out for a breather every so often. If they have to earn those opportunities, their behaviour is likely to get worse not better. At secondary school it’s trips to theme parks or inflatable obstacle courses at the end of term, but only for those with good attendance and behaviour throughout the year. It’s trips to water parks with photo displays on the school wall, and some children conspicuously not included. Even though they’ve already sat in detention or isolation as punishment for their behaviour. The behaviour marks are still there, never forgotten. This can mean that those who struggle most never get to do the things which enrich the lives of the other children. It means that some children miss out year after year – and it’s often the children whose parents aren’t able to or can’t afford to take them on trips. Their school lives are less interesting and varied as a result. School is about so much more than lessons, particularly for those who don’t get many chances to do extra things at home. Extra opportunities should be just that – opportunities and not rewards.

@cmclymer This is the moment I turned off television news permanently. The OJ trial was in newspapers. But I could make a choice to not read much past the headline. No choice with the TV news. It was gross and, yes, they have never recovered.

A lot of much smarter folks will have other things to say about the legacy of O.J. Simpson, but I will say this: His murder trial marks a pivotal moment in the decline of American broadcast news. It accelerated in our media environment an unapologetic centering of flash over substance, spin over good faith, and provocation over consideration. It permanently damaged broadcast news in ways from which it has never recovered, nor have we.

As a teacher, staying home to take care of yourself is more work than going to school and toughing it out. That's important for leaders to remember. So instead of when do you think you'll be back, perhaps we should ask, how can I help? Oh, and mental health is health.

Giving my classroom gluesticks human names has been revolutionary. Does a student care if a glue stick goes missing? No! Do they care if DEREK the glue stick has not been returned? ABSOLUTELY. It’s like a manhunt until Derek has been returned to his rightful spot.
