The morning after Naftali Bennett stood on stage in Tel Aviv and promised one constitution, one school system and one nation, he went to the Kotel. That was the real campaign photo. Bennett has always been a strange figure in Israeli politics. He wears a kippah, but he has never acted like the kippah belongs to a sector. Religious Zionists wanted him to be their man in the room. Their receipt. Their guarantee. He never really was. That is why the anger toward him still runs so deep. The same is true of his parties. Bayit Yehudi, Yamina, Bennett 2026, and now the merger with Lapid. These are vehicles. Useful, efficient, temporary. Built to move fast, win power, pass reforms and then be replaced. Bennett’s great gamble is that Israel is tired enough to choose competence over tribe. Maybe it was true before October 7. Today, I am much less sure. The country has hardened. Religious Zionism moved right. The ultra-Orthodox dug in. The center splintered. Everyone is looking for a home. Bennett is offering a vehicle. That may be brilliant.
