@Grummz At some point, @Microsoft's contracts with @NASA and @USGSA will be impacted by their growing technical incompetence. It's time that @satyanadella pivot away from AI slop and application bloatware and return to the fundamentals of simple, powerful, reliable enterprise software.

This.☝🏼 Community is everything.
When you think about what makes games great, it's rarely ever the quality of the title. The graveyard of defeat is littered with countless legendary titles waiting to be played.
Greatness is determined by players who convened, engaged, and cheered each other on as they explored the game world, amplifying the impact of its reach to unknowable audiences, and by the game studio that was humble and agile enough to generously listen to what gamers and the broader marketplace were saying, in order to show them that they truly mattered.
Games live and die by their communities of experience. Valve built an entire community ecosystem around this, and as long as they maintain it and protect it, they will never face a competitive threat they cannot easily dispatch.

@Spectre_Report @KhainesKorner Halo was an amazing title for this. By the time Halo came out, I was in college and I still fondly remember both shared gameplay around the @Xbox and, later, playing PC multiplayer lobbies with full LAN support all in the same dorm common room. Loved sharing vehicle combat live!

@KhainesKorner @Kaelon HALO LAN parties were the best.
English

It was the Summer of 1998, and my buddies would come over to my house and we'd have LAN parties that lasted all day as we played three- and four-way matches in StarCraft and, later, Brood Wars. It was the most magical that Blizzard has ever been, and I miss those days immensely.

It did make me think of this scene. It's turning into a pretty funny thread.

@it_unprofession If ever there was a case for jailbreaking your car, this is an easy one.
The continuing obsession of creating recurring revenue streams off of every possible feature or offering is alienating customers and driving them into alternative markets. Clearly not the intended outcome.
English

I tried to turn on my heated car seats this morning.
A pop-up on the dashboard told me my free trial had expired.
I'm freezing in my own driveway because I forgot to renew my seat subscription.
When did this become normal?
I own the car.
The heating coils are physically inside the seat.
But a server in California decided my lower back doesn't deserve warmth today.
To fix it, I have to download an app, create an account, and pay eight dollars a month.
I refused on principle.
Instead, I drove to work shivering while sitting on a microwaved towel.
My coworker asked why I smelled like damp cotton.
I told him I was protesting the modern economy.
Tomorrow I'm supposed to buy a smart toaster.
I'm terrified it will hold my bagels hostage until I watch a thirty-second ad.

@PCMag Love the focus on Linux as an alternative to Windows; this is clearly picking up steam given how badly Microsoft has dropped the ball on stability, bloat, and quality.
Gamers should consider Pop! OS if they have NVIDIA GPUs or hybrids, simply because setup is better than Mint.
English

Linux Mint isn't perfect, but it has some clear advantages over Windows 11. Here's what stood out after I made the move. pcmag.com/opinions/i-gav…
English

@WindowsLatest There is clear demand from gamers and enthusiasts alike for a non-Windows high performance gaming alternative. There are several viable early candidates now, from SteamOS to Pop! OS and others.
The moment a candidate Linux distro is perfected for gamers, expect huge jump of %.

English

Windows dominates Steam with 92.33% share, but Linux just crossed 5% in the latest Steam Hardware Survey, landing at 5.33% in March.
That’s a big jump from 2.23% in February, but the trend isn’t exactly steady. It was 3.38% in January, 3.58% in December, and 3.20% in November, so this spike could be temporary rather than a clear shift.
Linux remains far ahead of macOS.
Linux is gaining attention, but it’s too early to call it a real challenge to Windows just yet.

English

@Grummz Seriously, why are we trying to make everything a Service?
The demise of Epic's entire Fortnite service, the plunging margins and insanely high risk of video game development in the post-pandemic market reality should give pause to acolytes of the Church of Recurring Revenue.

@Warcraft Secrets are some of the most thrilling content that have ever been added to Warcraft, and the Felcycle Saga is no exception. This sort of evergreen mystery-solving is the stuff of legends, and I absolutely love how the magical tavern at the bottom of the ocean becomes our new HQ!

@KhainesKorner @Ex0du5_2169 I know it. I was lucky to live in a home with tons of computers, both old and new, so trying to get StarCraft running was no problem - Blizzard always makes their games so that they run well on legacy hardware. I set up three permanent stations, which is why my friends came over!
English

@Kaelon @Ex0du5_2169 I don't miss hauling my heavy-ass 17" CRT though :D
English

@Gamingtronium Windows 11 is a catastrophe. It's not just the AI slop and feature-bloat that has been added throughout the operating system, making it sluggish, laggy, and prone to crashes; it's that much of the Windows Update ecosystem is now being written exclusively by AI. And it's broken!
English

@JamesWelbes @EmDashCMS Presumably, the marketplace is the Cloudflare EmDash marketplace. After all, if they're providing the infrastructure to host and serve the marketplace as a comprehensive CDN/repository, then it makes sense for them to require the use of their network.
English

hrmmm so with @EmDashCMS you have two choices when you first initialize an EmDash project, you can choose the Cloudflare method, or node.js.
Apparently, if you choose node.js, you don't have access to the plugin marketplace.

@Ex0du5_2169 @KhainesKorner LAN parties were the absolute best. I felt like gaming had entered a truly social existence, and these were way superior to the random online multiplayer lobbies. The riotous laughter, the hilarious smack talk, the unparalleled adventure.
We could bring those days back!

@weatherchannel This is absolutely amazing, @WeatherChannel! Being able to travel back in time to the 1980s & 1990s to enjoy my Local on the 8s is pure magic, and reminds us all to embrace our unique and differentiated style and brand. I hope more of this comes (returns) to your programming.☀️

That’s the perfect way to describe it. “Viscerally satisfying” is so spot on. The tangible sense of the artwork and snappy interface with gorgeous animations and great production assets underly the fact that so much of the game was just an annoyingly arbitrary crawler clone.
But it was so good!
English

After all that ridiculous accusations of me farming or baiting, I’m too scared to ask you anything anymore.
But I’m going to ask anyway, because I don’t give a shit and I know what I do and don’t do on X. What’s your favourite dungeon crawler?
Maybe I’ll stumble across another gem I’d never heard of?
English

@flowless316 @pcgamer I fear you're right.
But still, I don't think - in the age where Live Services, especially Games-as-a-Service, are dying off rapidly - that trying to cater to the everyman is going to work. New players have limited time, yes, but still looking for a unique magical spark.
