When @British_Airways overbooks your flight by sooo many from Hamburg to Heathrow that after nearly a week of working away, you have to hope you'll get home today. That. Greedy or what??? Customer care anyone???

@Kathchad Last paragraph essentially - Continued risk of cold/snow conducive weather patterns but exact details on snow/locations remain unknown until closer to the time.

Cold Weather & Snow Risks - Update #6 This italic section below is an extract from the first update back on December 26th. --------------------- "A very strong +EAMT event is adding westerly momentum into the Pacific jet, this causes a jet streak which buckles the jet and this propagates downstream to impact the Atlantic sector, these are known as Rossby waves and they can lead to a much more meridional (wavey) jet stream with more amplified blocks & deeper troughs. Adding to the confidence is the MJO transitioning through phase 1, further increasing the amplification of the above mentioned signal. Key date period for cold potential: 8th-18th January." --------------------- Evidently that has now played out and the key period of interest has arrived. Colder weather is currently across the UK and some parts have seen some snow in the last couple of days. Next week, high pressure becomes established to the north-west over Greenland and much colder northerly winds take hold. Snow risks increasing across northern exposed coasts with the potential for more prolonged snowfall from low pressure systems or disturbances within the low. These details will be highlighted more specifically in the shorter range. Beyond that, it seems likely that blocking will begin to relax but it's possible we could see wedges of high pressure keep the cold entrenched across the UK opening the risk to further disruptive snowfall potential 20th - 5th February. How this plays out is still yet to be resolved. This up-coming period curtesy of +AAM westerly momentum propagating poleward from the equator into the sub tropics & tropics (30N - 60N) A newly developing area of westerly momentum is now being shown (second arrow) and this too, will propagate poleward with impacts seen during early February, i.e a signal for renewed blocking potential early Feb. Alongside this, the MJO will continue to progress eastwards, initially through less favourable phases for blocking but with a south shifted jet + possible wedges of high pressure this could produce significant snow in the period mentioned above. We then see a strong signal for the MJO to transition into the Pacific ocean increasing +FT & +MT leading to yet further westerly momentum. That's to say - There is NO signal for a return to a standard westerly regime. It's very possible the remainder of winter will see a repeating pattern of high latitude blocking & cold weather outbreaks with high impact snow events possible along the boundary between mild and cold.

3. Pick up the phone. People respond to people Nothing annoys me more than old hacks who say “young journalists are scared to pick up the phone”. In my view it is a lazy and tired stereotype. The young journalists I work with are assertive and willing to call anyone. However, it is indeed vital that you call people. People respond to people. They open up to people. They trust people. Nothing says your a person more than letting them hear your voice

This is my advice for young/new journalists. Some of these people will disagree with - that is fine. I have just found they work/worked for me or have seen them be effective for others. This list is far from exhaustive. Feel free to share and add your own advice. [Thread]

@Kathchad This doesn’t mean anything as it’s just a single model run well outside of any reliable timeframes, just interesting from a synoptic point of view.
