The Missile Defense Agency’s two High Altitude Observatory aircraft HALO 52 and HALO 53 Gulfstream 550s departed Melbourne, Florida about 10:20 AM Eastern today. Still no TFRs for closing the airspace, but the NOTAMs are active for the debris zones.

Biden fumbled a lot of foreign policy issues but pulling out of Afghanistan was his best act as president. No way to lose in a clean way, you just have to rip the band aid off. Obama was too deferential to his experts. Biden had the backbone to say "I don't care".

After nearly two years grounded for maintenance, the Boeing E-3D AWACS made a triumphant return at the 96th anniversary of the Chilean Air Force. Its radar dome and strategic role make it one of the most important assets in the region. Impressive to see it back.

"The Pentagon is considering whether to divert weapons intended for Ukraine to the Middle East as the war in Iran depletes some of the U.S. military’s most critical munitions, according to three people familiar with the matter. Although a final decision to redirect the equipment has not yet been made, the shift would highlight the growing trade-offs required to sustain the war with Iran, where U.S. Central Command has hit more than 9,000 targets in just under four weeks of fighting. The weapons that could be diverted away from Ukraine include air defense interceptor missiles, ordered through a NATO program launched last year in which partner countries buy U.S. arms for Kyiv, the three people said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to describe the Pentagon’s sensitive deliberations... Since last summer, the official said, the [PURL] initiative has supplied 75 percent of the missiles for Ukraine’s Patriot batteries and nearly all of the ammunition used in its other air defense systems." @noahjrobertson @ellen_fra washingtonpost.com/national-secur…

“Russia is close to completing a phased shipment of drones, medicine and food to Iran, according to western intelligence reports that detail Moscow’s efforts to keep its embattled partner fighting. Senior Iranian and Russian officials began secretly discussing delivering drones days after Israel and the US attacked Tehran, two officials briefed on the intelligence said. The processing of deliveries began in early March and was expected to be completed by the end of the month. Russia has close ties with Tehran and has provided its ally with crucial support including satellite imagery, targeting data and intelligence support, people familiar with the matter said… A senior western official said Moscow was stepping in to shore up not only the Iranians’ fighting capabilities but also to underwrite the broader political stability of Tehran’s regime… Russia has declined, however, Iranian requests for the S-400, one of Moscow’s most advanced air defence systems, current and former western officials said.” @Jacob_Judah @HenryJFoy @maxseddon @NeriZilber ft.com/content/d5d729…

"Russia has been expanding its intelligence sharing and military cooperation with Iran, providing satellite imagery and improved drone technology to aid Tehran’s targeting of U.S. forces in the region, people familiar with the matter said... The technology provided includes components of modified Shahed drones, which are meant to improve communication, navigation and targeting, the people said. Russia has also been drawing on its experience using drones in Ukraine, offering tactical guidance on how many drones should be used in operations and what altitudes they should strike from, said the people, who included a senior European intelligence officer. Russia has been providing Iran with the locations of U.S. military forces in the Middle East as well as those of its regional allies, The Wall Street Journal has reported. That cooperation has deepened in early days of the war, with Russia recently providing satellite imagery directly to Iran, said two of the people, the officer and a Middle Eastern diplomat. The assistance is similar to intelligence the U.S. and European allies have given to Ukraine in recent years, analysts say. In the Gulf, Moscow’s aid is believed to have helped Iran with recent strikes on U.S. radar systems in the region, said the people. Those strikes have included an early warning radar for a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, or Thaad, system in Jordan, as well as other targets in Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman." @tggrove @milanczerny @benoitfaucon wsj.com/world/russia-i…

As I mentioned yesterday, Japan's redistribution of it's forces into 3 Surface Warfare Groups each led by a Helicopter carrier (DDH) makes for quite a significant operating plan moving forward - potential to use them in a carrier strike group-type format given the number of escorts available!

Ground operation in Iran would be hell. Cheap FPV drones eliminate a lot of advantages that a developed military and well trained infantry such as American has. And it will be televised. I have been working with multiple units in Ukraine trying to minimize the impact of cheap fpv and bomber drones on the battlefield. We tried many things, from radars, shotguns, net guns, lasers, EW. Pretty much nothing works, there is no tech that can deterministically eliminate the threat. You can only minimize it, and we aren't talking about 80 percent mitigation, we are talking about 30 percent if you are lucky. Only physical barriers at the positions work effectively.

An Iranian-backed militia carried out a successful FPV drone strike on Camp Victory in Iraq yesterday, successfully hitting multiple targets. Seen here, one of the FPV attack munitions hits a parked UH-60 Black Hawk.

"Ukraine intensified drone attacks on Russia's oil and fuel export infrastructure this month, hitting all three of Russia's major western oil export ports, including Novorossiysk on the Black Sea and Primorsk and Ust-Luga on the Baltic Sea. According to Reuters calculations, about 40% of Russia's crude oil export capabilities - or around 2 million barrels per day, were shut as of Wednesday after the most recent attack. That includes Primorsk and Ust-Luga as well as the Druzhba pipeline, which runs through Ukraine to Hungary and Slovakia." reuters.com/business/energ…

Operationally, Epic Fury has been a success, but not without fault. Losses incurred by US & partner forces could have been minimized had the Trump Admin been more open to Ukrainian support; and the US Army more nimble in reforms. Here are the receipts to prove it. 🧵 ⬇️ 1/25
