@Canyonaro @boriquagato The Warren court that decided Barenblatt and Terry v Ohio, and upheld Korematsu, “dragged the US farther to the left than any politician could”? Good luck with that logic. Or are you upset that he wrote the unanimous opinion finding segregation unconstitutional?

@KevinMcGilly @boriquagato You're willfully ignoring that Earl Warren, nominated by a Eisenhower, dragged the US farther to the left than any politician ever could. Your counts are utterly meaningless to anyone who has even a cursory understanding of US jurisprudence. This isn't Canada.

this is one of these statements that inadvertently says far more than it intends: "we can no longer be OK with" implies that you used to be OK with it back when it benefited you and lifetime appointments were what kept the court stacked in your favor. you are now against them because you see that system as no longer benefitting you. that is the essence of tactical morality: it's based on no ethics or universal principle only upon the question "does this benefit me and give me what i want?" you make up new morals to meet your evolving need to win. i support the rules if they mean i get to score a goal. but if you score a goal, i want the rules changed. at a fundamental level, this is the repudiation of the idea of a social contract: i demand to be protected but refuse to be bound. you need to play by the rules of the game when i am winning but i will overturn the game board if i start to lose. that's neither morality or justice, it's just machiavellian application of power.

@avidseries this seems like an inapt frame. there are quite a few self described communists and marxists amoung the democrats and their leadership. there are no self described nazis among the GOP.

Almost every day I have people in my replies calling Democrats "Bolsheviks" or "commies" or "Marxists," and on those occasions I correct them, I often get ratiod in my own replies. Basically everything the right accuses the left of, they do themselves. The fact they can't see it tells you what a brain poison partisanship is.

In shocking news, calling your political opponents Nazis makes crazy people want to kill them. Who could have predicted this?

We're reinstating the limited juvenile curfew in Washington, DC. Effective tonight, all youth under 18 are subject to an 11PM curfew—which will extend through 5/1. Designated zones will be subject to an 8PM curfew as determined by the Chief of Police.

Driving is significantly more dangerous than transit and speeding is one of major reasons. Violators should be held accountable like all other laws. For clarity, this person does not work for Metro & definitely does not represent our value of safety in everything we do.

@wmataGM do you agree with this @wmata employee that speeding drivers don’t endanger anyone?

@shaynagoldman_ Shayna - This is an excellent, exhaustive, deeply reported piece., full of player insights and supporting data. After reading it, I have no idea who should win the Norris - which is the point! Thanks to you and your colleagues for the insights.

Who should win the Norris Trophy this year? It depends on how you interpret best all-around defense. What should go into Norris consideration + breaking down a uniquely deep field of contenders nytimes.com/athletic/71817…

Never seen an ad so explicitly call out an incumbent's age like this one from Hoosier Leadership for America Inc., a non-profit aligned w/ Sen. Jim Banks trying to primary the Indiana state senators who defied Trump on mid-decade redistricting.

@magi_jay Such a huge problem with the discourse on this website is the volume of people who wanna comment on politics without ever having cold knocked an average voter door. Everybody should do a canvas shift in a purple area before they open their mouths about what Democrats need to win.

@Carneys_Elbows @RomanFisher__ Nick Suzuki was and is entirely sincere. Everyone recognized and appreciated his sincerity. He continues to build good will by making an effort to speak to Habs fans in their language. If a hockey player can do it, so can a CEO. A few words go a long way. youtu.be/AZjEmY3QxGs?si…

If you have to be bilingual to be considered a worthy C-suite executive in Canada, you’re going to push out many of the best candidates. Convince me I’m wrong. Quebec cannot demand concessions from Anglo Canada in perpetuity without giving something back in exchange. The asymmetry is unsustainable.

@KMc_head If a Belgian CEO gave a speech in French only in Flanders, or a speech in Wallonia in Flemish only, he or she would be pilloried and out of a job within a day.

@KevinMcGilly @TCT_73 @RomanFisher__ Politicians are idiots. I would not expect a Flemish or Walloon CEO to repeat everything in the other language. Doesn't happen in Switzerland, a grown-up country...

@RomanFisher__ Again with the strawman. You aren’t the CEO of a flagship Canadian company. You didn’t promise four years ago to learn French, and you haven’t lived in Montreal for the past five years. Your Québecois employee didn’t just die tragically. This isn’t about you.

@KMc_head @TCT_73 @RomanFisher__ This is not true. Belgian politicians repeat everything in French and Flemish, word for word. It’s tedious and dumb. All the CEO had to do was show a modicum of awareness and say a few words of condolence in French to the pilot’s family. That’s all. Total leadership failure.

@Carneys_Elbows @RomanFisher__ This is Habs captain Nick Suzuki being interviewed in French. The interview was scripted. He read the answers off a teleprompter. This was nonetheless much lauded and appreciated in Québec, because he made an effort. That’s all the CEO needed to do. youtu.be/pcKV92ZCPqA?si…

Each electorate has its own political humiliation ritual where a small vocal cult forces you to affirm with straight face something you know to be ridiculous. Only outsiders are free to mock it. I’m picking on Canada here but they aren’t the only ones with something like this.

Air Canada Chief Executive Michael Rousseau issued an apology Thursday about his inability to speak French after facing sharp criticism from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on.wsj.com/4uSdQqX

@RomanFisher__ Oui. After getting his pilot’s license, Antoine Forest, the Air Canada pilot who died in this tragedy, moved to Ontario for a year to improve his English. The least the CEO of Air Canada, headquartered in Montréal, could do is express his condolences to the family en français.

@CMZParker5 Instead of punishing building owners struggling to find tenants, why don’t you offer retailers who agree to lease vacant storefronts tax *breaks,* waive application and permit fees, and expedite the slow and burdensome permitting processes they face? That might actually work.

We want the District's economy to thrive, and we know one thing holding us back is the number of vacant storefronts. That's why I'm advocating for a vacant storefront tax in the District's FY27 budget. Check out page 6 at ward5.us/budgetletter. I hope neighbors will join me at this year's budget oversight hearings to advocate for needed changes.
