Something very interesting has happened with 2023 draft revisionism, which is that everyone has forgotten Skenes was not the consensus #1 guy. He took a huge leap as a pro. All the pre-draft rumors had the Pirates looking at Langford or Crews.

Baseball America ranked Dylan Crews ahead of Paul Skenes in the 2023 Draft. One of those guys couldn’t make the roster of a rebuilding team and the other is the reigning Cy Young Award winner and one of the best young pitchers ever. I think they need to answer for that.

@JohnPlatner @JamesSurowiecki Yes. They passed what they could, because the Dems had 60 Senate votes for about 2 days between Franken being sworn in and Teddy Kennedy dying. If we had 3 or 4 more votes, we'd have really good insurance. But ACA is a huge improvement.

You could not, in fact, get coverage for costs above $5000 for $100 a month if you were one of the tens of millions of people who had any kind of pre-existing condition, or were just over the age of 50. And if you got pregnant, those plans offered limited coverage at best.

@JamesSurowiecki Those things had payout caps, where once they paid, say, $20k for the year, you were on the hook for 100% of what was left. And remember, the hospitals make up whatever number they want. It was hell.

Writers like Dan Brown and Andy Weir, who write ugly and clumsy prose at the sentence level, are sometimes extremely engaging storytellers in ways that transcend their technical deficiencies.
“Project: Hail Mary” is a story about a lonely astronaut who undertakes a one-way mission into deep space to do a science thing that is the only hope to save the world, and when he gets there, he encounters an alien bug who is also a lonely astronaut on the same kind of mission, and they become best friends and work together to do their science thing and find a way to get back home.
It is utterly charming, and everybody knows it. All these dunks are meaningless.

@kathrynw5 I can see $500k total comp being very difficult to live on comfortably with a kid in UWS. Take away taxes, 2 BR rent, and private school tuition and you’re left with <$100k easily for all other expenses.

@TalkNats @NotoriousAzn I really feel like the angst over this is driven by the shouting radio people. Crews is flailing and the best way to fix that is AAA at-bats. The mistake was seeing Crews hit .500 with a metal bat and assuming he'd be a star right away.

Dylan Crews has never been cut by any team at any age until 2 days ago. He's the same kid who withdrew his name from the draft out of High School to attend college. He didn't want a team to draft him just so he could turn them down as he wanted to attend LSU. He's a good kid who you hope can find his way back to greatness.

@MarkZuckerman He hit .208 last year and was not hitting at all (and looked lost) all spring. Of course he's going to AAA to see if he can work it out. Other than being a #2 pick, what's the big deal? It's not like a failed Rizzo pick should be news.

It had been a real struggle this spring for Crews, who was 3-for-28 with 10 strikeouts and at times looked lost at the plate. But figured the Nats would at least give him a month or so to start the season before considering a demotion.
