Youth hockey coaches say they want multi-sport athletes, until schedules conflict. The best players often excel in other sports. Prioritize compatible sports and 100% commitment to finishing seasons, not being threatened by cross-training. #YouthSports #AthleteDevelopment

@ClankoMedia Bad take. Toph has dedicated his career to improving youth hockey and is passionate about changing the culture. There’s no one more I’d rather see pushing governing bodies, politicians, or associations to take action than Toph.

Fair point. Now list all the things you’ve done to help/change youth hockey issues (ones you rightfully highlight and repeatedly on your podcast) as a voting board member of Illinois Amateur Hockey Association. We’ll wait…..

Another politician giving us problems with zero solution. Great bit for political points, what are you actually going to do to help? @CoryBooker - you're 100% correct that the costs of youth sports are out of control. Here are 3 things those in government can do to actually put your money where your mouth is. 1. Stop subsidizing private equity companies from coming into communities and taking over physical infrastructure (rinks, fields, etc...). They are coming into towns and taking tax payer money to build and operate facilities - they are billion dollar businesses let them foot the bill. 2. Stop allowing equipment companies to create monopolies. In hockey alone, prices of equipment have gone up 45% since COVID because of private equity mergers and a few big companies having a vast majority of the market share. 3. Invest in staff and directors for youth sports in communities. Many times these positions are held by volunteers who cannot put in the time and effort to run programs efficiently. So private entities come in to operate clubs, raising prices on everyone. Not to say some of these private entities don't do a good job, but on a macro level it raises costs on everyone. This is not just a cost issue. It's a mental and physical health issue. Our kids have never been more obese and physically unhealthy. The exorbitant costs price people out of sports sending kids to screens. Lack of sports in our communities decreases a sense of togetherness, teamwork, and belonging that are so important for our kids' life skills development. I'm so tired of politicians talking like this only to do absolutely nothing. You talk a great game, put your money and capital where your mouth is and actually do something to affect some positive change.

Speaking of feet! We’re giving away a @Garmin Approach S70 watch to whoever gets the closest to guessing my end of week step count at Pinehurst. Very normal stuff. The watch rules, and you can drop your guess in the comments. I am open to manipulating my routes on Sunday if you’re in contention and the offer is right.

@DevelopAthletes We do this 2x week for all teams U8-U11 and it’s worked great. First 20 mins always phys. lit and skating as a group, then into team stations or drills. Efficient, great energy, and kids love it.

Do most U9-U12 hockey teams pracy on ice alone? Only one team per ice session? Those lil’ legs don’t need full ice for 15 skaters ‘every’ time. If 2 pracys a wk why can’t 1 of them be with an age above/below? Multi-age ✔️ good for devp. Save expensive ice time costs…? 🤔

So great to see Brett Sinclair and his wife Dani on their visit home to St. Catharines. Sinny was the first goalie I recruited to ⁦@Curry_MHockey⁩ and is a former ⁦@StCathFalcons⁩ standout. Small hockey world is the best!

I keep saying this but, it needs repeating. We have youth sports all wrong. Dr James Andrews- “Athletes ages 14-and-under should have a two-month break with no organized leagues or intense training, Three to four would be better. Do conditioning, flexibility and strength work."

@CoachLynch_21 @YouthInc Michael - I’m interested to know why you believe specialized players pull away later the older they get. In my experience it’s typically the opposite with specialized players excelling pre-puberty given they’ve had more time interacting with one sport vs multiple sports

@YouthInc Sport Specialization I really think there are tons of benefits to playing multiple sports as a youth. ▪️play with diff athletes ▪️hand/eye/foot coordination ▪️transfer of playing concepts & skills But the reality is - as you get older the specialized players will pull away.

@YouthInc @TomFarrey @gregolsen88 check out topsports.ca up in Toronto. Our multi-sport setup allows kids to play competitive hockey, lax, and soccer with no schedule conflicts and balanced # of training hours in each. Generalist approach and let kids figure out what they love over time

.@OHFHockey, if we can strip away the politics and ego’s, I think you’ll find many of us “non-sanctioned” leagues follow the exact same rules you do, but are never given the chance to show you what we’re doing. Let’s create a solution. I’m available anytime: kevin@topsports.ca

Hey @OHF, here’s an idea: Instead creating a monopoly in minor hockey, why not engage with “non-sanctioned” leagues and help them with accreditation and sanctioning. I would love the opportunity to show you what we are doing at @TOPsportsTO to make hockey a better place.
Ontario Hockey Federation@OHFHockey

Important Reminder! 📢 The OHF has amended our Non-Sanctioned League Policy. Changes come into effect TODAY September 10, 2021 Read more here: ohf.on.ca/news/2021/onta…

Ontario is a joke. Arena's had set up legal cohorted camps for kids. As a result of us moving ahead to stage 2 these are all now required to close. This is absurd. We have more restrictions as a heavily vaccinated population than we did last year. #OpenOntario #twostepsbackwards
