Freddy is driving, and he’s doing it through the heartland, where people are kind and polite, the skies are wide open, and the bounty of Buc-ees and Bass Pro Shops are overwhelming. Freddy is not seeing fentanyl and decline. He is seeing the real, hopeful, patriotic, kind America that European tourists rarely traverse. And he loves it. That’s why Freddy is a phenomenon.

What exactly am I supposed to have in common with these people? “We’re all Americans.” No we are not. I have nothing whatsoever in common with people like this. In Halo's case, Reach worked because it was a prequel and relevant to the main story, ODST worked because it was a side-story, and even though I don't love them as much as the trilogy, they were still good games. It really just depends how you go about it. But post-Bungie Halo was explicitly a repudiation of what people loved about Halo in the first place.
