Ugly ads and landing pages often perform better, but not because they're ugly. They perform better because the person who made them wasn't spending his time on designing the most beautiful ad or page, but on research so that he’s writing copy and making content that resonates with his audience. In the beginning you should spend most of your time understanding your customer. How they think, what lingo they use to describe their problems and symptoms, what they've already tried that didn't work, what makes them skeptical, how they describe the dream outcome. That's the only way to resonate with them, so don't waste your time on making things look "beautiful", it won't move the needle. Good copy, an easy to read font (make it bigger than you think) on a contrasting background, and 1 accent color is more than enough to build creatives and pages that convert. Your design should be purely optimized for ease of digestion of copy and content, and leading them to the next stage in your funnel (eg. where to click). In later stages you can blend the two, great design that also converts. But until you do at least $10M/year, don't focus on design. Just keep it simple, and spend your time on things that actually drive conversion.

60-Second Copywriting Masterclass 1. Do enough research. Otherwise, you'll struggle to craft high-converting copy. 2. Always focus on the reader. They don't care about you. They care how YOU can help THEM. 3. Read your copy out loud. This is the BEST way to spot clunky flow and weird sentences. When you're done, read it out loud again. 4. Use paragraph breaks. Huge chunks of text burden the reader and make you sound like a university textbook. Write copy in short paragraphs. 5. Stay away from fancy words. If a 5th grader can't understand your copy, you need to dumb it down. Use the Hemingway app to do so. 6. Delete or rewrite "it". Once you're done writing, do a word search for "it" and rewrite as many instances as possible. Do the same for "this" and "that". 7. Don't try to reinvent the wheel. Beginner copywriters try to be creative. Advanced copywriters use proven templates.

Busi Mavuso wrote a nonsensical article about manufacturing. She blames Chinese car imports for killing local manufacturing of German vehicle and wants us to impose tariffs on China. She further claims that ‘Just Energy Transition’ would boost local manufacturing. This is all a load of bollocks. Local car manufacturers or assemblers are suffering not because of Chinese import but simply because of their extortionist pricing. There was a time that cars we export were cheaper outside than they were here. Chinese car manufacturers are offering value for money. That is how capitalism works: Competition! The argument that government should protect local manufacturers in order to protect jobs is a dishonest argument. The Chinese dealership network employs are much more than all these local manufacturers combined. Moreover, these Chinese companies are beginning to set up their manufacturing base here. The demand for government intervention, by people who preach free market and privatisation, in order to rescue capitalism is preposterous. Mavuso’s view that renewables are a necessary impetus for the manufacturing sector is not based on science but a dishonest gospel meant to benefit independent power producers (IPPs). Mavuso represents Business Leadership SA, which advocates for IPPs and cannot be objective on energy issues. What she fails to comprehend is the reality that the manufacturing sector cannot run on renewables. Germany has over 50% of installed energy capacity as renewables yet failed to sustain its manufacturing industries when the supply of cheap Russian gas came to a halt. A number of manufacturing plants shut down as a result. It is pure fantasy that by ramping up renewables it would boost industrialisation and our manufacturing capacity. The media needs to stop elevating these nonsensical opinion pieces by so-called business leaders.
