@joseph_gugino @SchlossmanGF A 2024 grad planning to play juniors next season would then have 2 years left. The 5 years eligibility for them are seasons 24/25, 25/26, 26/27, 27/28 and 28/29. They'd be enrolling for 27/28 season.

@SchlossmanGF Technically they get 5yrs right? So 2024 would have 3yrs and 2025 would have 4yrs

If it goes through like this, then 2024 and 2025 high school graduates who are planning to play junior hockey this upcoming season will not have four years of eligibility. 2024 grads would have two. 2025 grads would have three.
Mike McMahon@MikeMcMahonCHN

The NCAA sent this to institutions today on age-based implementation. If you graduate HS this year, your eligibility clock starts this fall. There’s a small runway for 2026 freshmen (in hockey mostly 05s and 06s) to enroll this year and play under the old rules.

@Roger_Chiasson @MikeMcMahonCHN It's now saying if you graduated HS before 26, and don't enroll this fall, you get the new rule when you enroll. You only get the option between rules if you enroll this fall.

@MikeMcMahonCHN I saw this chart when it came out and it doesn't appear to have changed. If you have already graduated HS you get the option of current v proposed rules. If you graduate HS this spring and going forward you get the new proposed 5 for 5 rules. Maybe I am missing something?

This is also what the NCAA sent out less than a week ago. Last Friday. Now what they have sent out today says that any player who does not enroll this season will be subject to the new rule. That completely contradicts what they sent out a week ago.

@Dougie0045 @AdamStensonACS It's interesting to read the comments. You can tell who is playing or has a son/daughter playing (or recently). It's honestly difficult to know the commitment unless you're in it.

@AdamStensonACS I’ll be honest I don’t know how anyone isn’t finishing school in four years and which institution that’s happening at. At the division three level at least.

NCAA should start a new rule that if you don’t transfer during your 4 years, then you get a 5th year of eligibility. And if you do transfer you don’t get the 5/5

@ClubberLangTON @Dougie0045 @AdamStensonACS Hockey starts in Aug and ends in March/April, so no out of season semester. With 2 summer classes for 3 years, that could put you a couple classes short. And then could finish the summer after senior year. I never said anything about not finishing.

@Kim_Conmy @Dougie0045 @AdamStensonACS If you’re taking 4 classes a semester AND summer classes you should be graduating on time. Also, there is very little reason to not be able to handle 5 classes out of season. And even after all of that if you are still “a couple classes short,” take 1 extra semester and finish

@Brit5416 @RossDellenger Of course I can't find it now. But there is no grace period. If you graduate HS in 2026 then the new rule applies.

The NCAA distributed a chart to member schools outlining the implementation scenarios of the 5-year, age-based eligibility concept. It’s clear the NCAA is expecting to adopt the concept for 2026-27. Important: Final waivers under current rules must be submitted by July 31.

@JustusCrowder @robert_turow @MikeJohnstonHC I think it would be better to show percentages of players from each league, because the leagues vary in size. Would still show the CHL leagues higher, but would be a more accurate comparison.

@robert_turow @MikeJohnstonHC True. That’s why there were 400+ former CHL players in the NHL this season who never stepped foot in the NCAA.

@TheRealMCZ @SchlossmanGF @HedgeyeDJ The NCAA has HS rules for college eligibility, making it not so easy to reclass: 1. Complete 16 NCAA-approved core-course credits in 8 semesters from start of 9th grade. 2. Meet the 10/7 requirement, by completing 10 of these 16 credits, before the start of your 7th semester

Is it that hard to reclass your sons? All it takes is a year of private school tuition which is nothing in the realm of the cost of grooming a college hockey player by age 18. Most hockey schools would be happy to take the extra year of tuition . I’m not sure I get what all the fuss is about. At some point the dads have to let go and give their sons a half shield, cut the cord and go earn a spot.

The outcomes suggest it works. Really well. That said, even if 18 year old freshman did make more sense, you still throw about five years (2006 - 2011) completely into the blender, fella.
ZolieTheGoalie@TheRealMCZ

@HedgeyeDJ I’m trying to understand why saving 21 year old freshman is sacrosanct to the sport of hockey. An 18 yo NHL draft but 21 year old freshman? Maybe the NHL and college hockey need to look in the mirror and reflect a little and perhaps restructure THEIR model to NBA and NHL.

@Kim_Conmy @RossDellenger The way I read this doc is 26 HS grads can still have a grace/gap year and still get full 5. Most likely because they had already made their plans to stop the recruiting process to attend prep or simply take a gap. Looks like the 27 grads are out of luck.

@MikeMcMahonCHN I understood that players graduating before 2026 could use either new or old rule, but didn't need to apply to the NCAA.

The NCAA is inviting feedback regarding the 5 Yr Eligibility Model that is set to be put to a vote (and likely implemented) on May 22. I still think there are a lot of unanswered questions and fallout that have not been throughly analyzed given the speed at which this has come to pass. The email to provide feedback is eligibilitymodel@ncaa.org. I’ve sent my two cents (ok maybe two dollars worth) and expect it will fall on deaf ears but at least I’ve got my anticipated concerns documented when they become reality. @noroster_limits @RossDellenger #CollegeSoccer

@Kim_Conmy @TrogdonRich @mlycan12 That’s incorrect, my sons NLI stated a percentage scholarship for athletic and a percentage scholarship for academics, with a total percentage stated for 4 years

When the 5th year is implemented, I am wondering how this works from a scholarship perspective. Are programs obligated to maintain the scholarship for any rising Senior who wants to play a 5th year (bc otherwise that would be taking their scholarship away?). And, what about the commitment process? Normally we are discussing scholarship offers for 4 years. Must we now automatically be discussing scholarships over 5 years? And if so, that’s going to really screw budget management bc not everyone will take a 5th year but it will tie up money that could’ve been used to commit someone else, until we actually know if they are taking a 5th year (and that will likely be very late in the process). 🤯🤯. Maybe there’s a athletics compliance person in the X universe that can chime in on this #5YearEligibility #NCAA #CollegeSoccer #SendHelp

@mlycan12 Correct if I am wrong, most schools pack together Academic and Athletic money into one package. Academic money only applies for 4 years/undergraduate? If the player graduates in 4 years or less, does the academic scholarship money go away while they take graduate classes in year5
