@parakala The danger Huxley foresaw was not violent tyranny. Citizens become passive consumers of centrally manufactured reality. The antidote may lie in rebuilding distributed trust, local production and decentralised coordination from below. Networked societies > managed populations.

“By means of ever more effective methods of mind-manipulation, the democracies will change their nature; the quaint old forms—elections, parliaments, Supreme Courts and all the rest—will remain. The underlying substance will be a new kind of non-violent totalitarianism. All the traditional names, all the hallowed slogans will remain exactly what they were in the good old days. Democracy and freedom will be the theme of every broadcast and editorial—but democracy and freedom in a strictly Pickwickian sense. Meanwhile the ruling oligarchy and its highly trained elite of soldiers, policemen, thought-manufacturers and mind-manipulators will quietly run the show as they see fit.” — Aldous Huxley, Brave New World Revisited

@RudraMukh @svembu Why does India copy socialism by giving the largest welfare of distributing food grains toml nearly 70% of its population, from a surplus created from development decisions taken during the Mixed Economy era mistakenly isentified as the Socialist era of India.

@svembu Highly disappointed by false judgement and no mention on India's poor learning outcomes (17/20 don't even have college degree.) India's GDP grew from $27 billion in 1947 to $296 billion in 1989 with CAGR of 5.87% per annum for 42 years. China's growth was 5.98% in same period.

In the 1980s, most IITians would go abroad. In 1989, when I graduated from IIT Madras, I remember feeling extremely dejected about our country. Punjab, Kashmir and Assam were all burning. My heart was not in engineering. I was mostly reading books in Economics and Philosophy - we had a good library. The burning question in my mind was "Why are we so poor?" Some of my classmates and I wrote an article in the IIT campus newspaper in late 1988-early 1989 (there were two newspapers, Focus and Spectator, and I believe we published in Focus, they were reproduced using "cyclostyling" machines - please look them up!). In my vague recollection, the thrust of the article was that the IIT system was failing to serve the needs of the country and the country itself was facing a profound stagnation (I wish I could get that article now - a copy may be in some dusty basement in IIT). I want to know what I thought and said as a 21 year old in 1989 that I agree with and what I disagree with today. By 1989, I had become a committed anti-socialist, having lived through the socialist stagnation of India. By 1989, the collapse of the Soviet Union was on, and China was in turmoil - the Tinananmen student protests and their forced suppression. By 1991, India needed an emergency IMF loan. The 1991 economic reforms by Shri Manmohan Singh happened due to pressure from the IMF. So you can imagine the mood in 1989. That was the India I left in 1989. I was feeling miserable to leave but hopeless to stay. In 1990, I came home for a visit and thought of dropping out of my PhD and staying home. I was home sick. I started to study Singapore and Japan during 1990-94 in my PhD years - the "Why are we so poor" question. By 1994, I decided I would be in the private sector and took up an R&D job in Qualcomm.

@RudraMukh @svembu And it laid the base for much further growth without loosing our democratic credentials. Which allowed us to avoid the type of famines which China experienced killing nearly 30-45 million people between 1958-62.

@beffjezos @elonmusk We need a system which raises all boats and not one which allows only select boats to continuously get bigger in the belief that in the process of the bigger boats getting bigger it will raise all boats. Instead it is not only destroying all other boats, they destroy the seas

@jasveer10 Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, Ambiguit characterises working systems today. Therisks are deeper—system-level even existential. Not only because of affordability, building a home for the next generation isn’t outdated its an imperative. And local roots really matters.

This post is for Indian parents. And for future Indian parents. Stop building houses for your son and daughter. You are solving the wrong problem. Stop spending your entire life savings building a ‘family home’ thinking your children will return and live there one day. It sounds emotional. But the reality is very different. I realized this when I recently visited my Nana ji’s house. That house was built with decades of savings. A lot of sacrifices. The intention was simple - Build a home for the next generation. Just like most Indian families do. They studied well. Built careers. Moved to bigger cities. One even moved to the US. Life upgraded for them. Opportunities pulled them elsewhere. And slowly the house that once held dreams now sits quietly with no one to light a lamp in the evening. Locked. Almost abandoned. Indian parents are solving the wrong problem. You want your son and daughter to grow, earn more, live bigger. But at the same time you expect them to live in the same house you built 30 years ago. That expectation is a contradiction. If your son or daughter earns 10x more than you, their lifestyle will also change. Their city may change. Their home will change. Their world will change. They are not going to live in the same house. Every 15-20 years homes become outdated and people move to new spaces that fit their life. So the house built with your entire life savings becomes irrelevant. Invest in their education. Invest in their freedom. Keep your money liquid. Use it to improve your own life. But please stop sacrificing your entire life to build a house for them.

Dear mainland Indians, We, the people of the Northeast, are not your jokes, not your stereotypes, and not your slurs. We are not ‘spa-wali,’ not ‘momo-wali,’ and never objects of exploitation. We are Indians—born of this land, bound by its Constitution, and equal in dignity, identity, and rights. Our faces may look different, our cultures may be distinct, but our patriotism is no less, our pain is no less, and our belonging is unquestionable. Respect us. Recognize us. We are India. 😢🙏

In the heart of Chennai, a temple is keeping a decades-old promise—serving Iftar as a gesture of unity and love. For over 40 years, the Sufidar Temple has been preparing and serving Iftar meals to Muslim brothers and sisters during Ramadan, proving that compassion knows no religion. This beautiful tradition was started by Dada Ratanchand, a Hindu refugee from Sindh, who sought refuge in Chennai during Partition. Today, Hindu and Muslim volunteers come together every morning at 7:30 AM to cook meals for around 1,200 people. The menu features fried rice, biryani, vegetable pickles, saffron milk, and fruits. By 5:30 PM, these meals are transported to the historic Wallajah Masjid, where volunteers, respectfully donning traditional Muslim caps, serve the fasting individuals. In a world often divided, this Chennai temple stands as a shining example of unity, reminding us that love, kindness, and tradition can bring communities together. Let’s celebrate this incredible story of compassion, faith, and togetherness! #UnityInDiversity #Ramadan #Ramzan #SufidarTemple #WallajahMasjid #Chennai [Chennai Temple Iftar, Communal Harmony, Sufidar Temple, Chennai, Wallajah Masjid, Ramadan 2026, Ramzan 2026, Religious Harmony]

I really wish Indian commentators stopped acting like the old India existed, and that if you only object enough, expose enough, get more people to see, the right things will happen. It is important to understand that we are no longer the India we grew up in. We are a capitalist colony kept in line with religious extremist violence, and if we want to survive this whole, we need to stop being delusional and respond to reality. Form strategies for the well being and survival of the common man that are independent of state support. Gandhian principles still work here. Satyagraha and ahimsa are important, but the long lost self-reliance is CRUCIAL. We need to stop seeing ourselves as capable of only one thing that we get incomes from, and becoming consumers of everything else we aren't "qualified" for. Our parents didn't call electricians to hang Diwali lights or buy special gadgets for tiny things. They innovated, DIYed, shared resources, repaired broken stuff instead of disposing it, made things last longer, so that incomes went further. We've turned into consumers of democracy too, using social media like some kind of a helpline for broken systems. As if somebody else will come and fix our lives if we outrage enough. It is high time Indians stopped expecting the country to work, and started figuring out what they can do to ensure their own well-being. How we can form resilient social networks that allow inter-dependence without depending on the state. Yes, agitate, oppose, speak up, BUT, also act and reduce dependence on broken systems and colonizers.

In India, when an accident happens and someone is fighting between life and death, in most situations, no one comes forward to help. It’s not that Indians are selfish or don’t want to help. This is because the system punishes those who try to help. When someone tries to help, they are asked to report to the police. Police unnecessarily drag them again and again for information, keep calling them, and ask them to visit the station or court. Imagine a middle class person with a daily hustle, a job to do, who decided to help someone in need. Instead of appreciation, his life turns into hell. In the recent Noida case where a techie drowned in water, no one stepped in to help. No NDRF/SDRF, no police. A delivery guy jumped in and tried to save him. The next day, he was dragged everywhere, from the site to the police station. SIT summoned him for investigation and the media followed him. As a normal person, he said everything on camera, but since he named the system responsible for the negligence, he is now being dragged even more. Imagine someone who earns ₹30 - ₹50 per delivery. His life was completely impacted because he decided to help. A witness has no dignity in this system. That’s why no one wants to help and this will keep passing on to generations, until we turn into a cold/heartless society.
