Over the last 8 years, 82% of our margins have come from our cattle enterprises, versus 18% from grain sales. We really need to lean harder into cover crops or just plant it all back to grass.

@riley_sides @sovernTranch My cousin raises hair sheep and he says ground lamb sells pretty well. You need a consistent market to sell to is the key. He has a good established customer base in Birmingham AL that makes it work

If you're wondering "who were these Russians who came to Tennessee in the early 20th century?" It was mostly Jews from the Pale of Settlement. Memphis was their primary destination. However there were a small number of Slavs who came to work in the iron industry in Middle TN.

Backyard chickens require insane amounts of inputs that you aren't going to be able to sustain in a food chain collapse. Want real backyard food security? Plant every square foot with POTATOES. PLANT POTATOES ON YOUR ROOF, IN YOUR LOCAL PARK, ON NEARBY STATE LAND, DOWN BY THE RAILROAD TRACKS, IN THE BAYOU, AT GRANDPA'S HOUSE, IN YOUR FRONT YARD, ON THE ESGES OF YOUR DRIVEWAY, ON THE HIGHWAY MEDIANS, AT YOUR KID'S SCHOOL, AT THE LOCAL POND, IN THE HOTEL PLANTERS DOWNTOWN, IN YOUR SUNROOM

Backyard chickens are one of the simplest, most powerful steps toward real food security. 🐔

In Texas we bought unwashed eggs from a lady who had chickens. Those eggs basically never ever went bad. They lasted forever. They came in interesting colors too - blue, yellow, beige, even a few white. One thing she warned is - because they weren’t washed, we had to wash our hands after handling them because there could be salmonella on the outside shell. So we washed our hands and never got sick. I miss our egg lady.
Wilson Dunham Farms@wilson_dunham_f

I learned yesterday that in the USA egg washing is essentially REQUIRED to sell commercially and they must be refrigerated. (With some exceptions) In the EU however egg washing is essentially FORBIDDEN and eggs are sold commercially off the shelf at room temperature.

@longstoryfarms I'd add for comparison that larger slaveholders also had the ability to drain and clear marginal land (malaria resistance in slaves) that yeomans and small slaveholders could not, a lot like the big guys who can afford to take in marginal acres and plant for mailbox $$

Where I live (also where my ancestors lived) is an area called the Dutch Fork due to German immigration in 2 large waves in the mid 1700s. The fork is the rivers merging on the way to the sea. You can see that up in that part of central SC the concentration of plantations is low. It was typical of German yeoman farms to not own slaves. My own paternal ancestors did not as far as we know. Slavery was failing as a system. Soil exhaustion was becoming a factor. During the Antebellum period, some low country plantations began to move or expand to our area looking for good cotton land. This displaced many German descended farmers who generally moved to the nearby states or the Midwest. This is why I call slavery based agriculture the “industrial ag” of its time. Similar economic and ecological markers: -Financialization -Soil exhaustion -Consolidation of small farms -Political power/the lobby It is important, on the last point, to note that slave owners were freeing their slaves to the degree that the “elites” in SC passed a law prohibiting the practice.
C. Sandbatch (Best Selling Poet)@CSandbatch

It's well known that the distribution of *slaves* and thus *slave owners* is heavily concentrated in just a few clusters. Traditionally "more than five slaves" was considered a planter, 25+ was a "large planter", and then there was a rarified category of "elite" planters.

@BuffaloByGodDan It is a special area. I've spent a lot of time there. Many of the creeks and rivers of southwest Georgia flow into Lake Seminole and eventually into the Apalach, and there's a lot of cultural, economic and ecological overlap between southwest Georgia and that section of Florida

Know the range of the Florida Yew Tree. The Florida Yew Tree, although not listed on any catalog by the US, is considered critically endangered by the International Union of Conservationists. Its only known existence is in a 10 to 15 square mile region in Florida’s panhandle along the Apalachicola River, within the confines of Torreya State Park. The sandy slopes and ravines of this area make for a rare, ideal habitat for the plant. The Florida Yew can grow up to 20 feet tall, even though many specimens like to remain low to the ground. They thrive in full sun, but can also handle the shade of thick forest, and are highly fire resistant. It has a scaly, brown or purple bark, with irregularly oriented branches, which give the tree a very unique look. The bark of the Florida Yew Tree contains packitaxel, a main ingredient in forms of chemotherapy, although it is not take from the Florida yew due to its endangered status. This rare conifer has no real threat from pests or disease. The two main threats to the tree’s survival is the low number existing in the wild, and the overpopulation of deer that live in the area. I do appreciate you all following along with me on this journey I’ve taken to explore the native ranges of our country’s trees. Several of you have pointed out that, looking at many of these maps, a large number of tree species that you wouldn’t associate with Florida do in fact grow along the Apalachicola. If there is one thing I have learned through all of this, it’s that the Apalachicola River reigns supreme when it comes to biodiversity in the southeast.

-My first encounter with Jews was when I was a little kid. An Israeli Military contingent was training on our Air Base. When I was walking through Wal Mart with my Mother, we saw 2 gay Israeli couples walking in front of us, kissing, and walking with their hands in each other's back pockets. -My second encounter with Jews was when I was visiting a family member in Beverly Hills. He was a FAR Leftist and lived in a predominately Jewish neighborhood. He despised the Jews, because of his experience with them as neighbors. He ranted about them to me, and I just brushed it off (because he is insane). When I was walking on the sidewalk, there was an older woman crossing the street, a Hassidic Jew in a nice car (BMW if I recall correctly) flew up on this older woman, slammed on the brakes, and held the horn as she tried to hurry across the street. He was yelling out of his window at her. -Now, looking back over my life, I have really never had a pleasant experience with a Jewish person. The ones who were in our churches over the years were particularly unpleasant and difficult to deal with. The Christians who continuously tried to adopt Jewish culture (holidays, dress, practices) were equally unpleasant. Now that I am older and have had more experience, this all makes sense. Hatred of Christ will make you insufferable.

One thing you’ll notice on old homes is, the roof lines are always reasonable and exist due to the structure of the house requiring it. In this case, a gabled roof with the ends perpendicular to the front of the house, gabled dormer on the second floor looking out. They chose to make the entry gabled over the stairs, but that was a style decision, and it makes sense. Modern homes have the most ridiculous roof lines that don’t correspond to anything inside the house.

I had a friend for whom nothing was too hot. One time we were at a restaurant and the waitress asked how hot he wanted his order. He leaned over and said "tell the cook I said he's a coward." It came out bright red and oily. It was so hot it was burning my eyes from across the table. He barely broke a sweat.

@ItsRobbAllen Ages ago, my then boss took myself and our French visitor to a mom & pop Chinese restaurant. He made the mistake of asking mama-san to make it "like you do for your family". That was...in error. Pretty sure this is what I looked like.

Jerusalem Lutheran Church was founded in 1734 by the Saltzburger colony who founded the town of New Ebenezer in colonial Georgia. The present structure was built between 1767-9. This church is the oldest public building in Georgia and the oldest active Lutheran congregation in the country. New Ebenezer was occupied by the British during the Revolutionary War and dwindled in population afterwards, it is a ghost town today.
