Somehow it was learning how many people are fulltime employed to maintain the Golden Gate Bridge that flipped something inside of me in my understanding of the entropic force civilization has to constantly fight against. 94% of San Jose's residential land is zoned single family. Sure, SJ has a lot of permitted units that haven't been able to start construction because of cost issues, but those are mainly large projects with union labor. San Jose absolutely has a zoning problem.
