“A long habit of not thinking a thing wrong, gives it a superficial appearance of being right, and raises at first a formidable outcry in defense of custom. But the tumult soon subsides. Time makes more converts than reason.”

In the U.S. we talk about creating "3rd Places" where people can hang out outside of work or home. Unfortunately, most of these places are private and involve buying over priced food. Barcelona's entire urban fabric is made up of 3rd Places, however. The private ones have affordable food and are open late. And the public ones are being carved out of spaces throughout the entire city. Barcelona seems far more socially healthy than most U.S. cities.

Los Angeles continues to be the most dangerous city for pedestrians, as fatalities continue to climb each year. So how do we make L.A. streets safer?!? A measure on the ballot will force the city to implement safety measures it has already approved. Let’s get into it!

Every restaurant, coffee shop, market, etc was bursting with customers. Bikes are good for business, for community, for physical and mental health, for the planet. ❤️ @CicLAvia

Never seen a bike or bus-lane block first-responders but watch cars do it all the time. Firefighters are Heros, but their union is wrong on this one. More options for Angelenos = less folks in cars = less congestion + open bike/bus lanes = no impact on response times. 🚑💨

In 1888, "Black Edison" Granville T. Woods, who also invented the 3rd rail and electronic train signaling, patented a system to electric trains to overhead wires that was adopted by railroads around the US. Zero emissions rail has a long history! #BlackHistoryMonth

Informal poll: do @metrolosangeles all-door boarding TAP card readers work for you? I @JoeLinton ride the Vermont bus a couple times a week and it seems like lately ~3/4 of these are dead.

The best way to enrich speculators is to stop building. But the best way to make speculation unprofitable is to build a lot more.

@LCI_Burbank @metrolosangeles I'm actually a big fan of ads on the subway, FWIW. Like performers and vendors, ads can make really make a metro feel safe and alive.

What are some common local mandates that drive up the cost of a single-family home? A few that I'm aware of: minimum lot sizes/unit sizes, excessive building material mandates, parking requirements (especially covered parking), basement mandates, etc. What am I missing?

@mottsmith Hey Mott. Tx for heads up. Working with vendor to either welcome you to the correct station or shut it down for time being. Screen is normally for ads.
