I've never been at an institution that charges labs rent by sqft in exchange for reduced indirects. Is this common other places?

@ohambiguity In neuroscience it depends on your role in the work and career stage. Early career PIs tend to be first author because they are doing most of the work themselves. Once you have trainees, they are putting the sweat equity in and take the first position as the PI moves to last.

@Meikeesther1 @kaaldinger I can speak for myself only, but this requirement means that I pay membership dues even when I do not intend on participating so that my students and students of my colleagues can have that member ID to enter to allow them to participate.

@kaaldinger On second thought. I’d rather hear a good reason. All the possible answers are cringe and bad.

Is there a good reason why an academic society would limit membership (and attendance to society meetings) to people who know at least two current members?
