A businesswoman has sought the court’s protection from imminent jail after defaulting on paying Sh15 million to Gulf African Bank.
Jacinta Mbithe Saku, in her case, filed before the High Court in Nairobi, claims that although she owes the lender the money, she does not have the means to pay it back. “The petitioner is genuinely unable to pay the decretal amount and there is no evidence of contumacious refusal to pay or that the petitioner has the means,” her lawyer Gerald Gakaria argued.

News: #Somaliland's #Israel deal could put #Berbera port at risk #Somaliland says its recognition by Israel could be a boon for its Berbera port. But with missiles flying across the region, it could also be a target. Berbera port on the Gulf of Aden has been transformed by the #UAE firm #DP_World over the past decade into a state-of-the-art facility on one of the world's busiest trade routes. Berbera still handles far fewer containers than nearby #Djibouti or #Mombasa, but port traffic was up 30 percent from 2023 to 2025, and recent diplomatic moves could lead to much more. A deal under negotiation with #Ethiopia, a landlocked neighbour with more than 130 million inhabitants, could see traffic rise by another 80 percent, said port authority director Ali Diriye Ahmed. Ethiopia did not respond to queries on the subject. But an alliance with Israel also brings risks, particularly as the US-Israeli attacks on Iran this weekend increase the threat of regional war. Abdel Malek al-Houthi, leader of the Iran-backed Houthi rebel group in Yemen, had already warned that any Israeli presence in Somaliland would be considered a "military target". The UAE, which has already been targeted this weekend by Iranian missiles, not only runs Berbera port, but has a nearby military base that it has recently expanded. Following the establishment of diplomatic relations between Israel and Somaliland on December 26, 2025, and in line with the understandings reached during the visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Gideon Sa’ar to Somaliland last month, the government of the State of Israel has granted an agrément to Somaliland’s first Ambassador to Israel, Dr. Mohamed Hagi.
Ambassador Dr. Mohamed Hagi currently serves as an advisor to the President of Somaliland and was a member of the inner circle of officials who promoted the establishment of relations between Israel and Somaliland throughout 2025.
An Israeli Ambassador to Somaliland will soon be appointed - an additional step in strengthening relations between the two countries.
In addition, this week, a designated course is being held in Israel by MASHAV, the International Cooperation Center of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for the Somaliland Water Authority and the Director General of the Ministry of Water of Somaliland. The course is intended to assist in the construction, development, and planning of the water sector in Somaliland, and to strengthen professional cooperation between the sides.

تُدين جمهورية صوماليلاند التصريحات الأخيرة الصادرة عن رئيس جمهورية تركيا، وتعتبرها تدخلاً غير مقبول يرمي إلى تقويض العلاقات بين صوماليلاند وشركائها الإقليميين.
وتؤكد على أنّ قرارات السياسة الخارجية لدول القرن الإفريقي ينبغي أن تُصاغ وتُقرَّر بإرادة حكوماتها وشعوبها، بعيدًا عن إسقاطات التنافسات الخارجية على المنطقة، وبما لا يعرّض الاستقرار الإقليمي والتعاون البنّاء بين الدول لأيّ مخاطر أو توترات.
وتدعو صوماليلاند تركيا إلى الامتناع عن اتخاذ مواقف من شأنها تأجيج التوترات، وإلى الالتزام بمبادئ الاحترام المتبادل، وعدم التدخل، واحترام استقلالية القرار السيادي لتلك الدول. إن انفتاح صوماليلاند على شركائها الإقليميين والدوليين، وسعيها لنيل الاعتراف الدولي، يُعد نهجاً سلمياً وقانونياً، يستند بصلابة إلى التطلعات الديمقراطية لشعبها الصّامد.

Tiny Djibouti and the AU Chair Mohamoud Ali have instrumentalised the African Union, turned into an tool of naked partisanship; a weapon to block the international recognition of Somaliland.
Just two latest moves:
Somalia elevated into the AUPSC - undeservingly.
Somalia put on African peer review mechanism - a role that ought to be reserved for states that are least fragile, well-governed and can exercise positive peer pressure.
But can the AU alone and singly stop a powerful international momentum?
Isn't the real decider of Somaliland recognition ultimately not geopolitics and bilateral strategic choice, rather than outdated normative multilateral principles?
