Then, it all fell through and now everyone I worked with is still struggling 2y later

The U.S. has a huge military budget because of it's chain of alliances, security guarantees, and commitment to freedom of navigation on the Seas. If you need this explained to you, that's probably why you're stupid enough to want to gut the military budget. Also, if you look at what Russia, Israel, Azerbaijan, and Turkey to name a few others have done over the last two decades, it's pretty clear that "shit isn't over."
