@peterawolf It’s better to just wipe out the 1/4 of mosquito species that prey on humans. The rest of them will quickly expand their numbers to prey on the other animals those mosquitos fed on, ensuring the overall number of mosquitoes in the wild remains basically flat.

What will happen to all the animals who eat mosquitos? I’ve heard about this fantasy for decades (it used to be “bioengineered retroviruses will kill them”), and nobody ever seems to address the extra-anthropological environmental fallout from such a campaign.
Alex Toussaint@alextoussss

Extremely excited to announce our first air-to-air kill of a flying moth by an autonomous micro-drone. This is a big step towards completely eradicating mosquitoes.

I have a funny personal story about Lindsey Graham. In 2010, he voted against the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" despite overwhelming bipartisan support to overturn the ban on gay, lesbian, bisexual Americans serving openly in our military. (It passed and got signed.) In 2013, he voted against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which would have provided protections against discrimination for LGBTQ Americans in the workplace. (Substantial bipartisan support in the Senate but the GOP-controlled House refused to take a vote on it.) In 2022, he voted against the Respect for Marriage Act despite bipartisan support for federalizing protections for same-sex marriage in case Obergefell got overturned. (The bill was passed and signed into law by President Biden). In fact, he pretty much opposed LGBTQ rights at every turn in his career, never offering anything in the way of sound legal reasoning to justify his opposition. A lot has been said about Mr. Graham's private life in the past few days. Some commentators say it's unfair to speculate over his sexual orientation, particularly in the wake of his death. I think it's rather unfair that this man spent his entire career making the lives of LGBTQ Americans much harder for no good reason. Just because it was politically convenient for him. It's been a rather fascinating exercise to watch many politicos and reporters share their fun and wistful anecdotes about Mr. Graham. He was so funny and so charming. That's nice. I'll always remember him as someone who viewed LGBTQ Americans as second-class citizens unworthy of equal treatment and dignity. Perhaps hypocritically so. Anyway... that's actually not a fun story but it is very personal.

@swd2 You are ignoring all of the things that happened before guns were drawn. If they have clearly identified themselves as Law Enforcement, and you tried to evade them, so they had to chase you down, THEN draw their guns... You are the idiot who tries to run them over and gets shot.

If I'm driving my car with my kids in the backseat and masked thugs with guns start screaming at me with guns drawn you can bet your ass I'm trying to get the hell out of there. I'm not sure why this is hard for some of you all to understand.

Remember: "Apartment housing" just means dividing a larger building into many smaller units, allowing more households to share the cost of land, roof, foundation, facade maintenance, building systems, yard, etc. Apartments can be owned or leased. Sadly, America has long suffered under the yoke of anti-scientific building regulations that prevent owners from building nice multifamily buildings -- the kind that people might want to buy units in to raise their family. But it's physically and legally possible to build aspirational family city apartments, with the right code changes.

To keep young families in the city we need an apartment housing solution that works for them at scale, because the era of new, abundant single-family housing supply is over.

Jeffries bringing up his personal opposition is obviously notable, but I think telling his members to vote their conscience is the much bigger deal here.
Riley Rogerson@riley_rogerson

Jeffries brought up his opposition to an amendment to cut off Israel aid during a House Democratic caucus meeting this morning. His message to members was “vote your conscience,” according to multiple lawmakers leaving the meeting.

I'd like to see a poll: "Statewide datacenter ban" versus "Datacenters must pay 'full freight' taxes + utility fees", with local bans allowed at the discretion of the community I suspect taxes & fees with local control of bans will be more popular?

Hotter take: It was clear that centrist Dems were rallying to Abundance (or at least reading about it and attending its conferences) and the left identified that movement's thermal exhaust port: Data center construction

Big announcement: We are taking on the largest landlord in America. Yesterday, our housing watchdog group filed 114 civil rights violations across six states and DC against mega landlord, Greystar.  The filings are the culmination of a multistate undercover sting operation in which our army of undercover investigators posed as families with housing vouchers to test Greystar's compliance with state fair housing laws. The evidence we uncovered was overwhelming in both its scope and severity. Greystar has been committing mass civil rights violations at a scale unlike anything our organization has ever seen. Never before have we encountered a landlord that operates with such an utter disdain toward the rule of law as Greystar.  The largest landlord in America is the most discriminatory landlord in America, and today marks the beginning of Greystar’s reckoning. Great piece from @trdny showing what we've known from the beginning: zoning/land use and other regulatory reforms are the necessary foundation to enabling any and all other forms of housing construction. No amount of funding/financing can build what is fundamentally illegal.🧵

Average consumer prices are up a cumulative 5.1% since the month Trump returned to office. As of June, they were up 3.5% since the previous June, exceeding the 3.0% year-over-year rate Trump inherited. It’s true prices fell 0.4% between May and June as gas prices fell after the Iran war-related spike, but now gas prices are rising again; regardless, “nobody else could do it” is an interesting claim about a decline from a spike caused by the president’s own war.

Trump: "Prices are coming way down and we're doing a great job. Remember that for the midterms. Remember that because nobody else could do it. Prices are way down."

An important piece, yet limited by its refusal to see that there is no response to the AI-apocalypse that doesn’t imply meddling with private property. As @adam_tooze put it, imagine doing nuclear non-proliferation if the Manhattan Project was privately run.

I genuinely think that average leftists are underestimating how much Uncommitted is going to hurt their favorite candidates electorally in primaries with the Dem base. That’s why you see some of them trying so hard to rewrite history and write Abdul out of it.
Sam Robinson@samueljrob

On El-Sayed’s support of Uncommitted, Stevens says, “Who did that help? When you sat out ‘24, that vote is an important thing. People are entitled to use it as that they see fit, but we also need courageous leaders right now.”
