In the US we use a system to make ballots untraceable. You cannot link a vote to a voter. Because of this it's impossible to prove election fraud after the ballot is recorded. The vote and voter info are split at that point. That isn't a bad thing but it means all the security needs to be before recording time.

The reality is there's mass amounts of cheating in our elections. Just because there's an engineered lack of data, does not mean there isn't data to the contrary. The new CBS/YouGov poll shows that 80% of Americans support Voter ID including 80% of black Americans & 77% of Hispanic Americans. Yet why is it that Congress seems so intractable to wanting to pass a such a popular policy?

I am in the boat of "I am not sure reforming Israel was a good idea, but that was a 2 generations ago choice." What is the expectation now, evacuate all the Israelis to some place new? Reason Israel was reformed was no one wanted to bring in Jews from Europe and the Middle East. They were denied at so many ports of entry, including the US, when they tried to flee Europe. The anti-Israel crowd would also refuse the population of Israel coming into the US or their own Western nation. Hamas isn't the only group that wants to throw the Jews into the sea. Hamas is just honest about it.

@Timcast Removing the dislike causes derangement. People look for social cues for good and bad behavior. Removing the thumbs down took away the bad behavior signal.

Men - do you have a "mental list" of things you need to do every day? Or do you tackle things as they pop up? (I'm asking because a friend and I were talking about this earlier and we both wondered how common it is for men, because it's VERY common for women)

@SandyofCthulhu Because you can't JUST enact rent controls. You also need a strong social housing program behind it, that can buy from the slum lords for pennies on the dollar when they inevitably bow out, as well as continue to build new supply.

The bishop of my former congregation worked in for the City of Berkeley. I was his clerk. He told us that when rent control got voted in, the landlords fell into two groups. One group jacked up their rents as high as possible before the law took effect. The others left their rents as was, trying to be nice guys. The "nice guys" then took it in the shorts. Some went bankrupt. Some just abandoned their buildings and let the city grab them for non-payment of taxes. Most followed the policy of never ever letting anyone new back into an apartment when someone moved out. The landlord end-game was if EVERYONE moved out of your complex, you could remodel the thing and then even Berkeley would let you calculate new rents. He said he knew of several apartment buildings in which only one tenant was left, hanging on for dear life. The owner just waiting for the guy to leave. Of course no landlord had any motivation to ever repair, repaint, or refurbish anything in a rent-controlled complex. When I moved to the East Bay I was pretty much pro-rent control. When I left, I thought it was the stupidest idea ever.
Mikli@CryptoMikli

Caleb Hammer explains why rent control doesn’t work “It’s one of those policies that sounds really good and really moral. You want to support it, landlords make less money and people pay less rent. But everywhere it’s been enacted, permitting has dropped significantly, and rents have gone up even faster for the average person, except for the few lucky ones in subsidized housing” “Units go untouched and aren’t maintained at all. I think something like 10-20% of rent controlled units in New York are empty because they can’t be brought up to standard, since it’s not worth investing in. In Massachusetts, rent control was a complete disaster and had to be repealed. In San Francisco, the moment they introduced it, permitting dropped. It just hasn’t worked”

For years cars have used hydraulic steering racks that used power steering fluid. Todays cars use electric steering racks which use no power steering fluid. Biggest difference to car owners is replacement cost. The hydraulic rack can be had for approx. $200 to $300 on most cars (plus labor). The electric rack will set you back $ 1,800 (part only) and much more depending on vehicle and they have to be programmed after installation. Technology comes at a cost many times. I will stick to keeping a 3 dollar bottle of power steering fluid on hand for my older car.

@rationalaussie Your first mistake was thinking white collar workers are smart. That segment of the labor pool isn't any smarter, just figured out different skill sets. White collar folks often lack common sense.

The bigger question here - and the real problem - is why does it take 5 years to become an electrician? You're seriously gonna tell me the smartest white collar workers (soon to be unemployed) are effectively prohibited from getting employed as a lucrative tradesperson during the final period where human employment even matters, because of regulations? It's insane. A smart person could turbo charge this in 6 months. The West needs fast-track trades programs.
Jason Shuman@JasonrShuman

The US needs 500,000 new electricians this decade. Apprenticeships take 5 years. Microsoft’s Brad Smith says it’s the #1 thing slowing data center expansion. The AI bottleneck isn’t chips. It’s the trades.

@Wallaby @AllegedlyDrew If Russia and China could actually get along they would have teamed up long ago. Both nations are ethno-nationalist, especially Russia, and have centuries of conflict against each other. China has manpower, Russia has resources and yet they can't even figure that out.

@AllegedlyDrew Someone left out. The EU signs an agreement with China. China couldn’t figure out how to isolate the US but we do it for them. In the end, Russia joins the EU/China alliance. There won’t be any going back, our government cannot be a trusted partner. Our global influence vanishes.

@Timcast Joe Kent sounds more that he is upset about Israel pushing this than the actual Iran Conflict. Iran has been killing US Soldiers for decades, we just forgot that. And this kicks a chair leg out from under China. Avoiding a war with China will save vastly more than we risk now.

One of the problems I always had while being the "history guy" for the Age of Empires series was that everyone always made jokes about how terrible the French were at war. Whereas in fact, France was such a force to be feared that during the 1600s and 1700s all of Europe usually had to band together to stop her. It all goes back to France's shameful performance in World War 2 (which was pathetic). That humiliating loss has echoed through the years. But I had to explain it again and again and again to people. Then they would say something like, "Well Napoleon lost." Even the somewhat historically literate, who knew of Agincourt and Crecy, were surprised when I explained that France not only won the 100 years war, but they won it stunningly, laying waste to British Continental pretensions. I blame France's abysmal performance in the Franco-Prussian War, WW2, and Dien Bien Phu. Get your act together France. Be the France that terrified all of Europe and fought literally every other nation to a standstill in 1697.

People can be rational with the information they have at hand. A person can only store so much information in their head and then the rest is intuition. So when they are looking at a product they have to remember: - product - personal use case - cost to them - other concerns - specifications - shipping/timing concerns. By adding the discount you are increasing the things to remember and they start discarding things further from their immediate view. It's rational, but shows limitation of information humans can store and use on average. Also remember average compared to 15% above average isn't even close, because it's exponential as you deviate from average.

When I was studying economics, I learned that people are rational. But is that true? For example, I sell things on ebay. I have found that people will pay higher prices if you give them a bigger discount. I get significantly more sales listing a shirt for $25 with a 20% discount vs. listing a shirt for $20 with a 10% discount- even though that's $2 cheaper. Yes, that larger discount percentage gives people a happy dopamine rush. Perhaps they value that feeling more than $2. Does that make it rational behavior?
