@bendreyfuss But you _aren't_ going to try to tell us that Himesh Patel was great in his large role as Odysseus's second-in-command (he's on screen at least the 4th most in the movie). And the random Korean-Ithacan guy who throws himself overboard hearing the Sirens wasn't exactly Olivier.

Sure i’ll explain it Nypng’o is an Oscar winner who was great in her small role. It is a win to have such a good actress in such a small role. Page is an Oscar nominee who was great in his small role. It is a win to have such a good actor in such a small role.

In all this endless discourse, has anybody yet come up with a theory of how Nolan's diversity casting choices _improved_ the movie? All I'm hearing so far are things like: - But film was good anyway. - Only on screen 5 minutes. - Why are you asking? Are you racist? - I hate you.

@bendreyfuss Is that thing where movies have to meet certain diversity quotas to be considered for Oscars still in place?

@timgill924 It would work how it currently works with race or whatever “protected class” you so desire: you are exposed to lawsuits if they don’t think you’re “diverse” enough. Google about Obama’s lawsuit against the FDNY using the keywords “disparate” and “impact.” @Steve_Sailer

And there you have it. Viewpoint diversity is simply a cover for ‘let’s put more Republicans in academia.’ And that’s an extremely dangerous position. How would a job call even look? One year hire a Republican? The next a Democrat? That’s absolutely crazy.

@CoreyWriting There really is nothing Congress can “do” about this except get out of the way, spend/tax less, roll back regulations, etc. Otherwise they are the guy who drills holes in a sinking boat in order to let the water out

I really think we need to do something about the affordability crisis. If young people actually could own homes, they'd feel like they have more stake in the system and wouldn't be inclined to burn it all down and implement hardcore socialism.

@amanitadg @BarneyFlames So are they making up percentages and then back calculating the vote numbers that would correspond? 45/70 = 0.643 e.g.

@bronzeagemantis Nor has he used the cudgel of Tibet against the Han. Instead, he has watched as the Han have imposed their culture on the far superior Tibetan people. Trump could reignite the cause of preserving Tibetan culture very easily.

One of the long-standing disappointments of the Trump years has been, despite initial hopes he would go in a Nixon-TR route... his subsequent gradual indifference to classic conservation and environmental matters, to animal suffering including preservation efforts in Africa against poaching (where there is an obvious wedge to use against the Chinese with their obsessive desire for tiger-tooth penis balm etc. that threatens to eat up the world's fauna)... Although in the beginning under multiple threads of influence from the online right, MAGAmoms, Michael Savage (who first had Trump repeatedly on in 2011 encouraging him to run), he was for a while open to classical Theodore Roosevelt-style conservation efforts, the problem of the poisoning of airs and waters, etc.....but he abandoned this very early in his first administration apparently under the wants of his daughter, and veered instead in the direction of Rush Limbaugh classic GOP-style blustering on animal cruelty, nature, etc....attitudes that are extremely unpleasant and turn off young people especially. TR and Nixon show this could be entirely within the sphere of the right or of American conservatism, and the left has largely abandoned real environmental causes to instead fixate on things like climate change (that in practice increase and even cynically use animal suffering, or hurt the environment) or their latest obsessions with data centers. Basically the left cares nothing at all anymore for real matters that would affect daily life, like the presence or preservation of nature, natural parks, clean food, air, and water, or animal welfare--name one leftist or liberal fundraiser in last few years to address the fate of gorillas, whales, or the problem of factory farming. There was here as elsewhere an opportunity for a progressive right candidate like Trump was in 2015 to take up a very popular and important matter, which he did at first...and then the matter was apparently dropped. Then we all had hopes when RFK came on in 2024 but he spends his time on just irrelevant nonsense for public consumption and online meme engagement, like Coca Cola in hospitals and encouraging tallow in French fries, while ignoring the problems of pollution, the defilement of public parks, the poisoning of the water table and food supply, etc.; maybe he'll do a collab next on seed-oil-free chips or convert to Orthodoxy. The most vicious attacks I and friends have taken on here for years since 2018 came from Koch world and their associated sockpuppet "pundits" who in various guises were fixated on me, and my friends, for precisely these matters: because maybe hundreds of billions are at stake for them and their friends. A lot of the fake libertarianism on here comes entirely from this world and has this motivation. I was hoping Trump as a billionaire could resist these people especially as they hated him from the start and tried to stop him on multiple occasions, but for whatever reason he rewards his enemies instead (imo he's maybe just out to lunch on this and ignores it idk). As for the post-Trump GOP they appear to be taking all the wrong lessons from 2015-6 and it appears not one likely successor will adopt this matter.
Bronze Age Pervert@bronzeagemantis

It is the last contingent, the pro-big-business-cartel lobby, funded by Kochs, Singer or equivalent that is the core of the "anti-green" memes they're attempting to spread on the online right. The green turn of the right is terminal event for these people, trillions at stake

The father of seven has not finished a thought in four years. he is just moving. feeding. driving. wiping. his brain is soup and his back is finished and he has no opinions about civilization he is too tired for opinions. and meanwhile civilization is growing out of him like he is dirt and he doesnt even notice because there is milk on the floor again. the childfree man has read eleven books this year about the decline of the west and he is the decline and the books are the evidence and he will understand this at fifty eight in a room that is very clean and very quiet

@misheg9ss @anglofuturist if i asked you what % of votes your mayor got in the last election, you'd probably say 50 or 55- if it wasn't a close race, maybe 85 or 90. youd probably not say 53, 82, etc. we have a bias towards numbers ending in 0 & 5, which we see when people make up polling numbers

It’s a category error to think that left/right is about economics today. The real bifurcation of our times is much deeper, and it only wears the communist/capitalist question as a skinsuit.

@DavidJacksonWi2 people already know there's death penalty and yet still they end up killing people, so it's obviously not a deterrent. he's serving life in prison now, how is the world less safe soley because of how he will die in prison?

scrolling through twitter i am seeing QTs of my tweet and it appears i have triggered a lot of men who cannot handle a woman as a defense attorney. they cannot handle that i'm proud to have saved a life. they can't handle that i morally don't believe in the death penalty (i also believe it violates the 8th amendment). they don't believe in the 6th amendment's right to counsel. they're actively wishing me dead for doing my job and calling me a whore because of my job (weirdest part). if you believe in the death penalty, that's fine. many do. but the irony of wishing me dead to say that murder is wrong and thus the death penalty is good is very puzzling.

New details are emerging about why Gov. Tim Walz's board of pardons gave clemency to a 42-year-old illegal immigrant convicted of repeatedly raping a child. Documents reviewed by Fox News Digital show that while the two board members who voted against granting a pardon noted the serious nature of Tou Lue Vang's offenses, the four who recommended a pardon each listed concerns about him being deported. One commissioner, Zach Linstrom, who voted in favor of granting the pardon, wrote in his recommendation, "Very tough case but the kids not having a father is not in the best interest of society," referring to Vang’s six children. Artika Roller, another commissioner who voted in favor of the pardon, wrote, "The applicant stated the need for clemency related to immigration issues." Following the recommendation, Walz's Board of Pardons granted Vang a full pardon. Secretary of State Marco Rubio then revoked Vang's legal status, allowing him to be deported despite the pardon.
