John Swinney coming across as shifty in seeking to stonewall legitimate questions about the Murrell affair at his press conference. He needs to say what he and SNP bosses knew and when - and why those who sought to call out financial wrongdoing were silenced and suppressed.

Peter Murrell is in prison tonight. But questions remain about how he was able to embezzle such a large sum of money, for so long, without SNP officials noticing. And without arousing the suspicions of the party leader, his wife, Nicola Sturgeon. @itvnews
Peter A Smith@PeterAdamSmith

Peter Murrell was once at the heart of power in Scotland. He was SNP chief exec; his wife, Nicola Sturgeon, SNP leader & First Minister. Today, we watched Peter Murrell being handcuffed in court. Then we saw him taken away in a prison van, guilty of embezzling more than £400k.

Swinney appointed Murrell so no wonder he's horrified. He should be resigning, not holding an independence vote in Holyrood today.

This case strikes me as extraordinary, both for the police behaviour and judge's apparent direction to the jury. Carrying an 8" knife is illegal with very limited exceptions which do not include "self defence". The Criminal Justice Act makes that plain, and the Sentencing Council says in terms "carrying a knife or other weapon for protection is not a lawful reason. " The Attorney General should be reviewing both this case and the case of the two teenage rapists ASAP. I don't know what is happening with our justice system at the moment, and I am not alone in that concern. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

Don't Forget: Today, John Swinney will attempt to relaunch the SNP’s doomed bid for a second referendum, arguing once again that the party can be trusted to run an independent country. Everybody will be laughing at him.

2021. Sean Clerkin reports the SNP to police over missing referendum funds. The EC has serious questions over the SNP own accounts. Three finance committee members resign after being blocked from seeing the books. Treasurer Douglas Chapman quits in disgust. But sure, we’re supposed to believe Nicola Sturgeon knew nothing? The supposedly astute, intelligent ex FM was never approached by anyone with concerns? At home She never asked peter " WTF is going on?" She never asked questions herself? And we’re definitely not meant to remember that for over a year she publicly insisted there were “no problems” with the finances. It’s not really “if she knew”. It’s what she knew, and when.

The Supreme Court has ruled that under UK law, trans people never had the rights people like you insisted they had. You misrepresented the law and cheered on the removal of women’s rights. Trans people have lost nothing except the mistaken belief you fostered.
Rachel Millward@rachelmillward

Today my heart is with our trans community, treated so abysmally in this country. Draft guidance means trans people are barred from services they could previously access & inclusive service providers will be at legal risk. Green Party statement: greenparty.org.uk/2026/05/22/sia…

Nicola Sturgeon can’t keep hiding behind “I knew nothing.” Her husband ran the SNP. Hundreds of thousands vanished. The police searched their home. Scotland deserves answers, not carefully scripted denials. Come clean, Nicola. The country is sick of the evasions.

@WestEndWifie @LucyHunterB The fact they have known since day one about it all yet carried on regardless is proof of involvement. Not holding an internal investigation speaks volumes and proves that they were complicit.

@LucyHunterB SNP leadership acting as victims, denying any responsibility for party accounts saying it was all down to Murrell is disingenuous.

The co-signatories to the account included Colin Beattie MSP (still); and the chair of the NEC when questioners were bullied out was Kirsteen Oswald MSP, now a minister in the Scottish Government's Justice team. The other signatory was of course Ms Sturgeon./
Chris McCall@Dennynews

Murrell, the estranged husband of Nicola Sturgeon, was a long serving chief executive of the SNP. The party will now face serious questions about its governance during the time of Murrell's offending. dailyrecord.co.uk/news/politics/…

@LucyHunterB @markthehibby 2/ Given NS was the FM the "I am am a wee wifey who signed off the accounts because hubby told me to" does not wash. If NS & CB did not know it demonstrates a gross failure in their fiduciary duties. They should be disbarred as Company Directors.

Not being indicted for a criminal offence really should not function as a complete shield from questions about anyone's failures here.
