Your math doesn’t math. Grocers have been raking in billions in profits — not revenues. A not-for-profit grocer would be immediately cheaper than any profit seeking one. It’s economics. @seanorr @matt_kercher @carriemae68
The Food Professor@FoodProfessor

Mr. Lewis, The only way a grocery store could help consumers save 40% is by obtaining goods from suppliers at no cost. That’s essentially what food banks do—and they already exist.

Lol. I'm breaking the first rule of the internet, "don't feed the trolls," but I'll give it a shot. Non-profit means one of two things. Volunteer altruism or theft. If you're going to run it without taking my money, go for it. Otherwise it's taking money from me and distributing it, inefficiently, to others. Free markets work for a reason, everybody wins. Nobody wins in your scenario. Sure some people get free shit, but it is stolen from others. If it works, you put thousands of people out of work and we all starve. If it doesn't you just steal my money and throw it down a hole to make yourself feel better. I'm betting on the latter. Feel free to stop lobbying and start your own food bank. Where you work for free and distribute donated goods that's altruism and also makes you feel good without stealing other people's shit.

@Heardbeast I can agree with that. We just need to be upfront that the goal is dignity, not work.

@Loteknik Move them off welfare into meaningful work that is within their capability, and that gives them dignity. We're rich. We can afford this. It could be more than paid for by limiting social programs to those making less than median income.

There probably is a role there, but not as easy as we think. A worker with a 90 IQ can dig a ditch (as per US army). A worker with -1 SD needs a supervisor who could likely be doing more work without the 'help'. Correlates with my own experience. Sure we can make it work, but admit up front that it doesn't increase productivity, it just makes us feel better.

@Loteknik My first reaction is "I got nothing", but no. I think we need to challenge the phrase "meaningfully contribute". Anyone in this situation is on welfare by definition. Pay them somewhat more and establish an industry. Mowing public lawns, cleaning public buildings, etc. 1/2

since ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) has been gamed into making nuclear (often) prohibitively expensive, I propose a new nuclear safety standard One Tenth Of Coal nuclear reactors have to produce less than one tenth the radiation than coal plants

The NDP leadership convention - an unintentional mockumentary at the level of Spinal Tap - concludes with a party that hates old white guys and Jews electing an old Jewish white guy as their leader. On a scale of 1 to 10, the irony goes to 11.

Oxford University researchers have discovered the densest element yet known to science... The new element, Governmentium (symbol=Gv), has one neutron, 25 assistant neutrons, 88 deputy neutrons and 198 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312. These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called pillocks. Since Governmentium has no electrons, it is inert. However, it can be detected because it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A tiny amount of Governmentium can cause a reaction that would normally take less than a second, to take from 4 days to 4 years to complete. Governmentium has a normal half-life of 2 to 6 years. It does not decay, but instead undergoes a reorganisation in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places. In fact, Governmentium's mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganisation will cause more morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes. This characteristic of moron promotion leads some scientists to believe that Governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a critical concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as a critical morass. When catalysed with money, Governmentium becomes Administratium (symbol=Ad), an element that radiates just as much energy as Governmentium, since it has half as many pillocks but twice as many morons.

@JerryTurin @Martyupnorth Funny. Doesn't seem to hold true in the police or military. You'd think that is because they are forced to confront reality on a regular basis, but so are healthcare workers. I don't have an explanation. Just an observation.

@Martyupnorth If a person is paid out of tax dollars they are more likely to be socialist. The cause & effect is really that simple.

Martyupnorth®- Unacceptable Fact Checker
I gave a talk in Lethbridge on Friday. It's a weird socialist stronghold in southern Alberta. Why? "....half of the workforce is employed in the health, education, retail and hospitality sectors, and the top five employers are government-based. Post-secondary institutes in the city include the (3rd rate) University of Lethbridge, the only university in Alberta south of Calgary...."

This is just what Canadians do Two years ago I stood on 2 acres of trees, and rocks I lived in a 17 foot camping trailer for those 2 years because I had an idea I bled,I cried,I fought pneumonia and the township But dammit I did it I built my house with the help of my son's,my friends the mennonites,an engineer and the trades Now I have 6 different fruit trees,12 types of berry bushes,a half acre garden, I butcher my chickens,I raised pigs last year Canadians are truly amazing We are one of the only race of people that leave the land better than we found it

It's a question of what's good enough. I'm not a physicist, but there's probably a definable level of purity sufficient to safely operate chips submerged in water. If you get fussy about it, I'm sure there's other suitable cooling fluids, but I suspect highly purified water is cheaper.

@Loteknik @DJSnM Pretty basic fact to anybody who accumulates info. Saw that on routine like 15 years ago. Even distilled water isn't contaminate free enough often be fully insulating

It’s wild to see how many of the comments on the data center thermals video are basically saying ‘put the data centers under water’ - yes they’re easy to cool there, but a lot harder to power. It’s like they’ve missed the basic concept of engineering trades.

@foullonL In this case it was distilled which is the practical solution (pun not intended). But I would simply define 'pure' as lack of dissolved minerals or particulate.

How do you define "pure water": distilled?
German War Helmet@Loteknik

@DJSnM Fun fact that I learned while touring a swimming pool reactor. They had an unprotected work light submerged in the pool so I asked the obvious question. Turns out pure water is a terrible conductor and acts like an electrical insulator.
