When you escalate a war to the strengths of your opponent, its not escalate to win. The 20,000 feet war played to the US strengths. It is time for US to cut losses & announce an honourable ( or whatever is left of it) exit. As the war shift to 2 ft above the ground three factors suggest the escalation needs a rethink. One, an airborne force with computer generated wargame outcomes & satellite image terrain knowledge against a predominantly land forces military & the sons of soil is a bad equation. Two, an army with a deeply ingrained religious belief of self-sacrifice versus an army that doesnt accept a single body bag has serious implications on the "will" of the people & the morale of the force. Three, the evident lack of clarity of objectives gets even more magnified as more resources are thrown in to an already messy situation. None of these augur well for the US.

DESCENT INTO CHAOS The Americans are magical when it comes to aerial combat from 20,000 feet high As the fight descends to lower levels the asymmetry keeps declining, the combat differential narrows. When it comes to low level aerial sorties or slower rotary wing platforms, the vulnerability to MANPADS and heat seeking missiles, gets exposed In ground combat when both sides are equal - 6 feet tall, the fight will become even bloodier and grim. Do not forget that in Iraq, the menace of roadside bombs was an Iranian / Suleimani Project. When Trump escalates rhetoric unrealistically - the reduction to the stone age bit - the American military is forced to commit to capacities, that lie in the zone of vulnerability. Presidential rhetoric precipitates operational errors. Seizure of the 440 kg of HEU from Esfahan or the seizure of Kharg, could be the likely manifestations. That is what perhaps the now retired (sacked) Chief of Army Staff Gen Randy George was warning about. But Hegseth does not want to pay heed A diplomatic deal is no longer in the offing, because the trust is dead. So many times in the past have the mediations been bombed, that mediation has lost its utility. With each passing decapitation strike, the new IRGC leadership gets more and more hardline. In the contest between American Resolve and Iranian Resilience, the latter is gaining the edge Due to all of the above, America seems to be walking into the familiar ESCALATION TRAP. When even tactical succèses/ victories do not produce commensurate strategic/political outcomes, you double down on the former - just two more weeks, a limited ground invasion, et al - and ultimately end up in a deeper morass. In the Strait meanwhile. the complications grow. The Iranians backed by the Chinese are now asserting that the narrow sea exit through the Hormuz lies in Iranian territorial waters and that Iran could open the strait to civilian and commercial shipping only. American warships will be denied entry - in that case what will the fate of the American naval base in Bahrain be? Trump is by his own actions steadily cutting off all options to make a WINNING EXIT. If he does not find a good off-ramp soon, even CUTTING LOSSES AND MAKING A RUN, will no longer be a good option.

Let me explain the US - Iran war differently. Most of you must have heard the "Rumble in the Jungle" in Zaire in 1974. It was a cult song when we were growing up. That was a fight, totally asymmetric, pitching a "new kid" called Muhammed Ali against the world champion George Foreman. The odds, as per AI, were 3:1 in support of Foreman. George Foreman had just KOed Ken Norton & Joe Frazier in 2 rds. Both had beaten Cassius Clay aka Muhammad Ali. The Ali- Foreman fight ended with a KO in the 8th round. Foreman later admitted he took the fight lightly, expecting it to be the "easiest money" of his career. He and his team actually prayed in the dressing room that he wouldn't accidentally kill Ali. But in the end history was turned on its head. This is not a one off example. Its all about strategy not brute force. Ali adopted a " rope a dope" strategy. Instead of moving, Ali covered up and leaned back, allowing the ropes to cushion the impact of Foreman's punches. The primary objective was to let a far more powerful and aggressive opponent, George Foreman, exhaust his energy by punching. By the 8th round, a worn-out Foreman could not handle the pressure, and Ali knocked him out, regaining the heavyweight title.  The Iranians seem to follow a "rope a dope" strategy tiring the US & Israel with cheap affordable Shaheds & SRBMs. The real accurate " punches" ie precisionary hypersonic missiles are only now being launched even as US rushes to gather the CEOs of the Primes to quadruple production of " exquisite weapons". As the rounds pass , the fight in the ring is all about stamina & logistics. ITS NOT ABOUT PUNCHES. How good is the team supporting the US in the ring & how much stamina does the US have to take on other title fights on the way to the crown is what matters. Time will tell.
