This is a disappointing judgment which effectively renders the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act toothless. It sends a message to universities that they only need to pay lip service to the new free speech duties in the Act and not actually do anything concrete to uphold academic freedom and free speech on campus.
This judgment will effectively leave academics like Kathleen Stock defenceless, while empowering activists to hound off campus anyone they disagree with. We very much hope the Office for Students appeals and if it does we hope to intervene.

Our regime imports terrorists, gives them passports, calls them ‘British’, then says ‘oh he turned out to be a violent terrorist but he’s British so this has nothing to do with immigration, diversity is our strength, you’re racist if you disagree’.
Most voters think this is mental but it’s been *cross party consensus* for 25 years like prioritising rights of foreign murderers over Britain’s safety in law.
It will continue for years.

This is a huge setback for academic freedom.
Kathleen Stock was hounded out of her job by a small group of radical activists who did not like her academic views.
As the Minister for the Free Speech Act,
I hope the OfS appeals and that Bridget Philipson stands with them.
