I second, Excellency, the Congratulations to Kenya’s 🇰🇪 Sabastian Sawe, who accomplished what was considered, until now, an impossible feat: a marathon ran in under 2 hours! But what is equally amazing is that Yomif Kejelcha of Ethiopia 🇪🇹 came in second, with a sub-2 hour time of his own. Two sub-2 hour marathons (the ‘Holy Grail’ of long distance running) on the same day, on the same track! Amazing!! Uganda’s 🇺🇬 Jacob Kiplimo was off by just under 30 seconds to come in third. An under-2 hour trifecta by sons of IGAD would have been out of this world. Congratulations to all!

With Djibouti Interior Minister, HE Said Nouh Hassan, glad to launch the High Level Technical Experts’ Meeting on Irregular Migeration and Migeration Management on the Eastern (Red Sea) Route, in Tadjourah, Djibouti. This consultative meeting, attended by the IGAD Committee of Ambassadors and the Ambassador of Yemen in Djibouti (a key transit State) follows the 3rd IGAD Ministerial Conference on Migeration held in Nairobi on October 2025, which instructed the @IGADsecretariat to facilitate dialogue and consensus on this issue. With the partnership of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office in Djibouti, the European Union and Sweden, this dialogue will address the suffering, exploitation, smuggling, trafficking and death associated with the perilous journey across the Red Sea as a result of social, economic, and security challenges in our region. @UNmigration @DjiboutiIom @PNUDDjibouti @SweinEthiopia @Sida @SingoeiAKorir @ForeignOfficeKE

IGAD, the Government of Djibouti, IOM, the European Union, SIDA, and partners have convened in Tadjourah, #Djibouti, for a technical experts meeting on irregular migration, trafficking in persons, smuggling of migrants, and safe migration governance along the Eastern Route.

Thank you excellency @DrWorkneh for your support towards the Horn of Africa Gateway Project, which strengthens connectivity and trade in IGAD.

Following the 28th Horn of Africa Initiative meeting in Washington, D.C., where I called for borderlands to be placed at the centre of sustainable development, I today received Mandera County Governor H.E. @MohamedAkhalif and the Ambassador of Kenya to Ethiopia, H.E. Galma Boru in our offices in Addis Ababa. Our discussion focused on the Ethiopia-Kenya consultations on the Horn of Africa Gateway Project, convened by IGAD, and its role in connecting communities, expanding trade, and creating opportunity in cross border areas.

Glad to attend the ‘Africa We Build’ Summit, cohosted by the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) and the Government of Kenya, in Nairobi Kenya. Flagged off by President William S. Ruto @WilliamsRuto and President Yuweri K Museveni @KagutaMuseveni , a clarion call for African investment in infrastructure and the deepening of Region Integration. The Africa Finance Corporation agreed to establish their Regional Office in Nairobi, and a Hosting Agreement was signed. I congratulated HE @MusaliaMudavadi on this historic milestone!

IGAD Reaffirms Commitment to Peace and Recovery in Sudan In Berlin, Germany, an IGAD delegation led by the IGAD Special Envoy for Sudan, Amb. Korbandy, participated in the Conference on Sudan, joining regional and international partners in calling for urgent action to advance peace, strengthen the humanitarian response, and support a sustainable political solution. IGAD’s participation reaffirmed the organisation’s continued commitment to supporting Sudan and working with partners to promote dialogue, ease human suffering, and advance coordinated efforts towards peace, stability, and recovery. With HE @aliabdiweli, Glad to engage HE Hakan Fidan @HakanFidan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkiye at the reception for the African Heads of Delegation at the end of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum. His articulation of the vision of the Africa-Turkiye Partnership was well received by the assembled dignitaries.

Glad to share a platform with a distinguished panel on Mediation in the Horn of Africa (HE Ali Mohamed Omar, @AliOmarMP, State Minister for Foreign Affairs and International CooperationFederal Republic of Somalia, HE Abdiweli Mohamed Ali, @aliabdiweli, African Union Head of Mission in South Sudan, HE Annette Weber, @EUSR_Weber, Special Representative for the Horn of Africa, European Union, and distinguished professors Alpaslan Özerdem, Dean, The Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution and Sultan Barakat, Professor, Hamad Bin Khalifa University. The role of Turkiye in Mediation, specially between Ethiopia and Somalia, and the need to coordinate competing Mediation Initiatives in Sudan were highlighted.

Pleasure to meet and engage HE Rosemary DiCarlo, @DicarloRosemary United Nations Under-Secretary General for Political and Peace-Building Affairs at the State Dinner, hosted by HE Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President for the Republic of Turkiye and First Lady, HE Emine Erdoğan. The Antalya Diplomacy Forum brings influential and interested stakeholders from across the Globe, and it was enlightening to listen to Her Excellency’s experience and wisdom on a number of issues!

Glad to discuss with European Union Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, HE Annette Weber @EUSR_Weber on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum in Antalya, Turkiye. We discussed the situation in Sudan, and how build on the Quintet declaration at the Sudan Meeting in Berlin. We also discussed the situation in South Sudan and how to revitalize the R-ARCSS agreement on the conflict of South Sudan.

On the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum @AntalyaDF, glad to discuss with HE Mohieddin Salem Ahmed Ibrahim, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sudan. On the third anniversary of the start of the Sudan conflict, we discussed how to reinvigorate dialogue to end the conflict and improve the humanitarian situation in Sudan. Realignment and synchronization of competing peace initiatives is urgently needed.

Productive meeting with Mr Ndiamé Diop, World Bank Vice President for Eastern and Southern Africa, on the margins of the 2026 World Bank IMF Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C. We explored opportunities to deepen partnership in regional trade integration, fragility reduction, and resilience-building in cross-border areas across the IGAD region, at a time when the continent is grappling with the far-reaching effects of global instability. I also held bilateral discussions with the newly appointed World Bank Regional Director for Eastern Africa, Mr Nathan Belete. We reviewed the IGAD World Bank development projects portfolio and agreed on the need for a more strategic coordination framework to enhance efficiency and maximise impact in advancing regional public good.

Pleasure to welcome an @AfDB_group delegation led by Ms Roza Mamuye Bora, Principal Statistician at AfDB, who are at the IGAD Secretariat for a four day appraisal mission aimed at enhancing socio economic statistics across the IGAD region. Good statistics is essential for evidence-based decision making by policy makers and other stakeholders. We look forward to this critical collaboration with the African Development Bank.
