I have been briefed on today’s horrifying stabbings on the Upper West Side, where an Asian man and a Jewish man were attacked. According to witness and victim statements, the perpetrator yelled “Allahu Akbar” during both attacks. I am relieved that both victims are in stable condition.
The NYPD responded immediately and arrested Raul Morales in connection with both assaults—and I am grateful to the officers for their swift response.
The NYPD’s initial investigation suggests that mental health may have been a factor. They are also evaluating these stabbings as potential hate crimes.
These hateful and despicable attacks have no place in our city.

This afternoon, two people were stabbed in separate attacks on the Upper West Side. Both victims — an Asian male and a Jewish male — were removed to Mt. Sinai-St. Luke’s Hospital, and both are expected to survive. The NYPD has arrested 51-year-old Raul Morales in connection with both assaults, and no other people are being sought. Detectives are continuing to work the case and determine motive, but according to victim and witness statements, Morales yelled “Allahu Akbar” during both attacks. The NYPD is currently evaluating whether this is a potential hate crime. While the perpetrator has no known mental health history with the NYPD, the initial investigation suggests that mental health may have been a factor. At this time there is no known link between Morales and either of the victims, nor between the victims and each other. I want to commend the bravery of a good Samaritan who led our officers to the location where the perpetrator was hiding, as well as our NYPD cops who brought an end to the incident without further injuries.

Exactly. This is one element of why I said she codes black. Specifically I mean she codes and blends well with black women voters. Black women carry a lot of weight and oftentimes, the political arena are one of the few areas they can relax and have fun. Her personality and how it’s directed at people invites this.
I have two great Haley stories from the trenches.
I worked for Abdul in 18, and when he lost I work for Stevens in general vs Republican Lena Epstein. On the very first day as someone new whereas all other staff had been with her for months, and low level on team Haley. At my first in person staff meeting that was about to start, I look across the faces in the full room. Then I notice that Haley is looking directly at me. She then gives a warm smile. Never felt welcomed like that in team Abdul. I had just finished working and spending the most 1:1 time with him over the past 10 months.
Now Abdul for Senate race, we all show up to a county black caucus forum event. Abdul has his label mic on for recording audio. We arrive as a team right as her team does. They greet each other, she then leans into his mic, and says in her quirky energetic way. “O Abdul has his little mic on, I’m going to tell him all my secrets.” Entire hallway lights up with laughter, including Abdul’s staff, he of course doesn’t.
