MORE: The loss of key leadership and Mojtaba’s reported inability to govern at least partially explain the rising role of the IRGC, and specifically hardline IRGC figures close to Mojtaba, such as IRGC Commander Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, and former IRGC Commander Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari. These IRGC officers were reportedly among the individuals who pushed to get Mojtaba selected as the next supreme leader. All three have historically held senior positions across Iran’s military, political, and internal security institutions. They represent a network of influential and highly ideological actors with deep ties to the regime’s coercive apparatus. These individuals are among the most aggressive and repressive elements within the IRGC.

NEW: Iran launched two ballistic missiles targeting the US-UK base at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean on March 21, marking the furthest ever attempted Iranian missile strike. The attack demonstrated that Iranian missiles can reach beyond the 2,000-kilometer limit that the regime has long claimed to have self-imposed. One missile failed inflight, and the United States intercepted the other. Other Key Takeaways: The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) has reportedly expanded its influence over regime decision-making amid a growing power vacuum caused by leadership losses and Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei’s apparent inability to exercise full authority. Some of the officials who have likely expanded their influence are among the most aggressive and repressive elements within the IRGC. The United States Treasury Department issued a short-term waiver on March 20, permitting the sale of Iranian oil already in transit. The waiver does not allow for new purchases of oil. The combined force continued to degrade Iran’s missile production capabilities. The IDF struck at least five missile production sites in Tehran.

@realDonaldTrump ups the ante against the Islamic Republic of Iran. The regime has 48 hours to open the Strait of Hormuz or the U.S. will begin striking Iranian power stations.

NEW: High resolution satellite imagery taken by Airbus confirms the strike reported by the IDF on a large building at Malek Ashtar University. See before and after images of the most recent strike.  In its announcement today of the recent strike, the IDF described the attacked site as, "a strategic research and development site used by the Iranian terror regime to develop components for nuclear weapons production." Further, it stated (translated from Hebrew), "The Malek Ashtar University site served the Iranian terror regime's military industries and ballistic missile array for developing components for nuclear weapons and combat means. Malek Ashtar University is subordinate to the Iranian Ministry of Defense and has been under international sanctions for decades of activity to advance the nuclear program and develop ballistic missiles."

John, respectfully, @mdubowitz & I share the same goal in ensuring the Islamic Republic of Iran never gets a a nuclear weapon let alone an ICBM that could deliver it. Mark’s original point — full disclosure, my work has been frequently cited on the @FDD’s website — was that Iran was lying about the range of its ballistic missiles with the implication that if Tehran is willing to lie about that, it is highly likely the regime is lying about its nuclear weapons program. Additionally — again, respectfully — you can’t conflate Russia’s MAD approach to that of an Iran in the future — a rogue state since its inception that aspires to be a regional nuclear power. Iran, for 47 years has directly & indirectly killed 1,600 Americans. The IRGC has worked tirelessly to destabilize the entire region — Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, Gaza, etc. — out of an obsession with Israel. If Iran gets nukes, they would simply take that to a whole new level. You are — and once again, respectfully — conflating how you would think as an American versus how a regime member thinks as an Iranian. They are NOT the same. Doing so — thinking your enemy thinks like you do — is dangerous when it comes to national security. The regime may be rational actors but they are not acting based on U.S. or western style rationale. Lastly, Mark & I are not warmongers. Iran has been waging a war against Israel since 1979. They are the warmongers here. The only thing he & I are advocating for — as we do for Ukraine — is the right of democracies defending against tyrannies. Best to you, Mark

@mdubowitz @MCTothSTL You are against Trump lifting sanctions on Iran, right? If their missile program is so dangerous why would you not be against lifting sanctions? Unless there’s something else driving your commentary. 🧐

Iran said its missiles stopped at 2,000 km. Then it fired at Diego Garcia — 4,000 km away. That has exposed what many warned for years. Tehran was advancing rapidly toward nuclear-carrying ICBMs that directly threaten the American homeland.

NEW: The United States dropped bunker buster munitions on the Natanz nuclear facility, Esfahan Province, on March 21. The combined force previously struck the Natanz complex on March 2 and severely damaged at least three buildings. Natanz is one of the two primary Iranian enrichment sites. The IAEA reported in February 2025 that international inspectors observed activity at Natanz but could not verify the purpose or nature of the activity. (1/2) Iran launched two ballistic missiles (IRBM) targeting the US-UK base at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. One missile failed inflight, and the United States intercepted the other. This attack marks the furthest ever attempted Iranian missile strike. Diego Garcia is located approximately 4,000 kilometers from Iran’s southernmost point. Senior Iranian officials have previously claimed that they had limited their missile ranges to 2,000 kilometers. The combined force continued to strike defense industrial sites across Iran, including facilities that produce drones and naval weapons. OSINT account @ayatsubzero geolocated a US strike conducted last week at a drone production plant in Khorzuq, Esfahan Province, that produced Shahed one-way attack drones. The United States Treasury Department issued a short-term waiver permitting the sale of Iranian oil already in transit. The waiver does not allow for new purchases of oil. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the United States will continue to maintain maximum pressure on Iran to limit its access to the international financial system and, therefore, any revenue generated from the oil sales.

Speaks for itself: Feb. 25, 2026: “We are not developing long-range missiles… we have limited the range below 2,000 kilometers” — Iran’s FM Araghchi (IRNA). March 20, 2026: Iran fires missiles at Diego Garcia—ranging 4,000 kilometers (WSJ). ⬇️

@realDonaldTrump & @SecRubio, Is this an invitation to China — who uses the Strait of Hormuz — to patrol it? Pray tell, how would yielding strategic control of the Persian Gulf serve American national security interests? Or is this just a threat to @NATO to help or else?
