The President and the Governor are the only two constitutional offices who take an oath different from that of the Vice-President, the Prime Minister, the Chief Minister, Members of Parliament, Members of Assembly, and other functionaries like Judges. All of us — the Vice-President, the Prime Minister, and others — take oath to abide by the Constitution, but the Hon’ble President and the Hon’ble Governor take oath to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution. That day is etched in our memories as we entered the hallowed portals of the majestic red Dholpur sandstone South Block building of India’s #MinistryofExternalAffairs as eager, fresh-faced 21-22-year-olds to join one of the greatest foreign services in the world! Dreaming of conquering the world in friendship and mutual benefit on India’s behalf, we represented India in many different countries and continents in the neighborhood, in #Asia, #LatinAmerica, #Europe, #Africa, and #NorthAmerica, and also specialized in economic and multilateral diplomacy, including working in the @UN. Time to look back in gratitude to #MaBharati for giving us that privilege!

There’s a threatening undertone in Garcetti’s remark. Not clear who is cynical in its calculations. Double standards are based on cynicism. US /NATO policy towards Russia is based on cynical geopolitics. India is not taking the US for granted. Our past experience cautions us against that. Perhaps US should not overplay its hand vis a vis India. India wants very good relations with the US but they should not be based on efforts to restrict our foreign policy choices when the US accepts no such restriction at all on its choices.US’s China policy is not based on India’s concerns, nor is its Russia policy based on our concerns. Let’s avoid using terms like cynicism.

U.S Meltdown over Modi-Putin meet continues. Now, US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti says, "...It's important for us as Americans and as Indians to remember the more we put into this relationship, the more we will get out. The more we insist on a kind of cynical calculation in the place of a trusted relationship, the less we will get...As I also remind my Indian friends, while it is wider and it is deeper than it's ever been, it is not yet deep enough that if we take it for granted from the Indian side towards America..." Garcetti is stating the obvious but the U.S is clearly not heeding his advice on "putting in enough". If the U.S did it wouldn't be brazenly sheltering individuals like Pannum commited to the Khalistani separatist cause that threatens India's territorial sovereignty. Apart from disregard, there's also an element of hypocrisy after all aren't U.S NATO allies also buying India's oil purchases from Russia?
